Blog Action Day - Water
Today is blog action day and thousands of bloggers are writing about water. This evening’s picture shows lights and buildings reflected on the River Thames.

In the year 2000 over £50,000 was raised for the Abingdon Millennium project. It included donations from Abingdon UK and Abingdon Virginia. There is no millennium monument to show for it – no sculpture on the Market Place. Instead, the money went to help fund WaterAid projects in Ethiopia and India. I wonder how we are progressing towards the target of clean water for everybody in 2015. It sounded achievable in 2000 …

Week 2 – waste collection – recyclables

New Bins
Week 2 of the new refuse collection. Being town centre they came round early before the traffic builds up.
New Bins
Our large green bin was full so we could be doubling the amount recycled compared with the old system. The brown composting bin is quite empty – two large bunches of flowers from a birthday and a few grass cutting. The old style dustbin is there to be recycled itself. The little green food waste bin has less kitchen waste than last week.

The Duke of Gloucester came to Abingdon

Duke of Gloucester
Yesterday, The Duke of Gloucester opened Abingdon Resource and Wellbeing Centre. The Day Centre which used to be near the library, has moved to the Abbey Centre in Audlett Drive and been upgraded to a Resource and Well Being Centre – something more than a Day Centre. It now also has the aim of ‘ keeping individuals in their own homes for as long as possible and to actively address health needs at an early stage.‘ They and other user groups of the Abbey Centre were there to see him.

Town Centre Movers and Openers

Skinny Hippo
Where the Cherries amusement arcade once was, a Skinny Hippo is coming… I think they do Crafts and Gifts. Children or anyone over 60 can come in and be creative and make their own card or pot on the premises, while those of an inbetween age browse gifts from around the world.
What was the Charter Barber
Somebody is moving into the Charter Barber. No idea what they are to be. Those boxes only contained chairs.
Guitar Workshop
Remade Guitar workshop and sales are about to open at Coxeters. So in a matter of months Abingdon has gone from zero to two guitar shops. You can buy a guitar in one, smash it, and then remake it in the other.
Gift Centre
The Gift Centre has nearly completed their move to a few doors further up the shopping centre, and have opened.
