Abingdon Air and Country Show 2014

The Abingdon Air and Country show, at Dalton Barracks, attracted large crowds on May 4th 2014. The skies were clear and the sunny weather ideal for watching airplanes, walking round the stalls, and viewing all the vehicles on show. Any profits go to a good cause.

BBC Radio Oxford were broadcasting from the show. As part of their regular visits round the places in Oxfordshire their week in Abingdon co-coincided with the show. More about Abingdon from them next week.

I see in the Oxford Mail that there is an estimated crowd of up to 20,000, the biggest ever by all accounts.

The Brietling Wingwalkers were back for about the third year.

There are more picture on the Abingdon Blog Facebook page where Colin, one of the organisers says “Huge thanks to the many thoud=sands who supported the show today…I think I’m right in saying everyone had a great time.”

Any money raised goes to the Air Ambulance and other charities like the Royal British Legion.

Justin completes 100 mile run

Justin, the Abingdon town centre postman, finished the 100 mile sponsored run, from Richmond to Oxford, along the Thames Path in 26hr 02min 16sec.

100 mile run
There were lots of others runners, from all parts of the UK, passed by the feeding station at Abingdon, where Justin’s supporters gave them all a cheer.

One of them said “It easy really!!! I’m just making it look difficult” as he hobbled on his way.

Saturday of May Bank Holiday Weekend

The Mayday Bank Holiday weekend began with a slight frost. Mist floated over the water of the River Thames, below Abingdon Bridge.

On the Market Place the 10th Abingdon (St Helen’s) Scout Group had a table top sale.

Last weekend the district scouts held a St George’s Day parade at the European School in Culham. Gone are the days when there is a parade in Abingdon every year since the merger of Abingdon District and Didcot District in April 2012.
Saturday
There were two buskers on the Bury Street Shopping Centre, one playing the lute, and the other the flute.

As the day progressed people looked up to the skies at the roar of aircraft arriving, or practising for the 2014 Abingdon Air and Country Show. It is at Dalton Barracks, tomorrow (May 4th).
