Open Air Pool Opens Today – Good Friday

Open Air Pool Opens
The Hinksey Outdoor Pool, off the Abingdon Road in Oxford, was open for the first time this morning from 8am. The water was lovely and warm and there were lots of swimmers taking advantage of this first chance for an open air swim in 2015. You would hardly notice it was raining.

The Friends of The Outdoor Pool have run a good campaign and got lots of publicity. With just a few days left they are now in the final push to try to secure the future of the Abingdon Outdoor Pool. IF GLL, the new pool operator, can run the pool as well as Fusion run the Hinksey Outdoor Pool then it will have a great future.

But if you can’t wait until then, details of the Hinksey Outdoor Pool can be found on their facebook page.

Trees near water

Strong Winds affected much of Abingdon on Monday and Tuesday. Branches and twigs were left strewn about, but as so often happens, the trees on soft land, near one or other of the rivers, fared worse.

After the wind, along the Mill Stream, and the banks of the River Thames, some trees were left leaning at a greater angle,

or even carried further from their original bank.

One tree, covered in ivy, near the bottom of Healey Close, by the River Ock, had been toppled over.

Hire Boats back in the water

Hire Boats back in the water
The hire boats, including some new ones, are back in the River Thames at Abingdon Bridge. They were very nearly sold and lost as a visitor attraction last autumn.

Then Salters stepped in and took over the Kingcraft business as a going concern. Abingdon Bridge Marine Limited (a company wholly owned by Salter Brothers of Oxford) will now operate the chandlery, moorings, and fuel business, as well as operate hire boats.

In addition the website Abingdon Bridge Marine says they will be operating 40 Minute return boat trips daily From 1st April 2015 (towards Culham Lock cut).

Salter Steamers will continue to operate the Abingdon to Oxford and Abingdon to Wallingford long-haul services, but will operate from Abingdon Bridge Marine rather than the Upper Reaches Hotel.
