Development of the Lidl Store on the Fairacres Estate has been cracking on and four large Lidl signs have been mounted.

They include one on each side of the store itself and one overlooking the Marcham Road, at the far end.

By searching, using a well known search engine, I found Lidl advertising for Customer Assistants and Shift Managers in Abingdon. ‘As a Customer Assistant at Lidl, no shift is the same and you get out what you put in. Starting at 5am some days to set up the store bakery for the day or finishing at 11pm on others to close the store and ensure the store is ready for another day of customers, you’ll keep moving and keep business booming. Every day is different, so you won’t just be working deliveries or working on the till; you’ll be doing all of it and more. You could even train to be a freshness specialist, non-food specialist or a bakery specialist…’

They have an online aptitude test before an application passes to the interview stage. My impression of Lidl and Aldi is the terrific speed items are scanned at the till.

Meanwhile the time is over for responding to the Planning Application for an Aldi Store at the top end of the Circus Field, opposite the new development off Wootton Road.

Both neighbouring parish councils have concerns about the traffic modelling and siting of the proposed entrance.  Abingdon-on-Thames Town Council have objected to the plan. The last two posts were of Old Abbey House and the Marina. Daniel send some pictures of these from the air.

Drones can record some amazing shots and videos that until a few years ago, were only possible from aircraft and hot air balloons.

They must need pilot skills as well as camera skills. They show things that are not obvious to us on the ground.

At Old Abbey House those buildings at the front may have served as a conservatory or orangery, and in the aerial view you can see they are separate.

Marina Park almost accessible again

During the lockdown there continue to be more people out on most walking routes, that includes quite a few walking to and from the Marina Park. It had been out of bounds for a couple of weeks and is now just about accessible without wellington boots.

Instead of the group of five swans there were just two when we arrived. One of them, probably the adult male, was splashing about furiously.

Two other swans swam over, and instead of a family welcome the adult male chased one of them away. He did not seem to worry about the other youngster. So perhaps one was looking rather too adult, while the other still looked young enough not to worry about.

There is also a boat run aground off Marina Park.

If anybody gets the Cumnor Parish News then they will know a lot about the goings and comings at the Marina Park. There is a piece written by one of the boat owners about life on a boat in the marina. It is very well written.

Old Abbey House to become hotel and Charter Day Centre to be run by Yellow Submarine

There was a press release from the Vale of White Horse District Council yesterday to say that Old Abbey House has been sold to Ede Holdings Ltd of Witney for £927,000 and that they will develop and run it as a 20 bedroom hotel.

Ede Holdings are mainly house builders and developers but they originally built and co-owned the Four Pillars Hotel Group before selling it on. So this is a return to running a hotel for them.

Daniel Ede, a director intends to work with the local economy and says ‘We want to work closely with other local businesses and people, and initially will be looking for a local laundry provider and a local baker for fresh morning produce, as well as cleaning staff.’

It will also provide career opportunities in the hospitality sector.

There were several bidders for Old Abbey House. The press release goes on to say ‘Another positive to come from the bidding process saw a number of community groups putting forward proposals that may also benefit the town. One group is Oxfordshire-based charity Yellow Submarine, who support young people with learning disabilities and autism. Yellow Submarine will occupy The Charter building in Abingdon town centre, following on from its current use to support the vaccination programme.’

P.S. Yesterday I saw a long queue of people waiting for vaccinations outside the Charter. Over 15 million people in the UK have now had their first vaccination.
