Flowers and art in St Ethelwolds garden

Visitors are usually welcome to look around the garden and relax. There is a blaze of firey colour along the wall at St Ethelwolds.

Looking back at the house, the flowers are a foaming sea of lilac and pink.

Last weekend three artists had a display of pictures in the outhouse. Dougie Simpson, Caroline Ritson and Marion Owen are regular art exhibitors in St Ethelwold’s garden.

The Radley Lakes Trust organised a community event with cakes, nature activities, and music at Radley Lakes. I left my bike in good company and looked around.

The Abingdon Community Choir sang a song written specially by Helen Eccleston. It began:
Come and spend a while down by the Lake
with a view to make you smile down by the Lake
…

The choir were followed by Trev Williams by the Lake.

The Radley Lakes Trust carried out a survey at their information stall by the Lake.

The Thrupp Lake cake stall also sold ice lollies on this hot afternoon.

The sun was out, and the blue sky was reflected in Thrupp Lake.

Nature activities by the Lake included plant identification with David Guyoncourt

and bird watching through a telescope with Ian Elkins

and Graham Bateman on the lookout for mini beasts.

Saturday 9th July Events

Volunteers were setting up the plot to plate community event this evening. The event looks big, and The Abbey Buildings and grounds are being fully used. These planters are examples of the great variety of ways to grow plants. The rag bunting used at the Jubliee in the Meadow is getting re-used.

At St Nicolas Church, volunteers were setting up the Kennington Memory Club Summer Sale that is on from 10 am – 12 noon.

For youngsters in South Abingdon, the annual Play and Activity Day will be from 11 am until 3 pm.

P.S. This morning, the blog had a frightening security message. That was my fault. The security certificate was out of date and needed replacing.

Other people have told me they see a strange page when they google Abingdon Blog. The google robot got lost when it last visited. Maybe next time it will find the right place.

A spectacular display

Here are pictures from the spectacular floral displays in Abingdon on the 7th of July 2022, the day that Prime Minister Boris Johnson resigned after a series of resignations by government ministers.

Boris Johnson’s time in office was the most eventful of any recent Prime Minister. It began with getting Brexit Done. There followed a Pandemic that forced people to stay at home.

The real danger came when he sacked his Brexit ally, Dominic Cummings, appointed as the  Prime Minister’s special adviser. Dominic Cummings blogged about parties at 10 Downing Street when the rest of the country was in lockdown.

Russia invaded Ukraine, and Boris Johnson became a friend of Ukraine.

Spectacular displays do not go on forever.
