My Superpower

The first of the month is the day for a “theme day”, and the September 2022 theme is “My Superpower.” It is difficult to choose. But in the end, I have gone for the power to disappear. Click HERE to see more superpowers from around the world.

What’s “Your Superpower”?

St Ethelwold’s Garden at the end of August

St Ethelwold’s garden is open for all to find peace and inspiration. A display of pictures, inside St Ethelwold’s House, shows the garden over the last six decades.

Two volunteer gardeners were working today. In 2021, the gardeners introduced an irrigation system – more efficient than hosepipes – that other gardeners could copy.

Many flowers are blooming, making the garden popular with insects, particularly bumble bees and honey bees.

There are also flowers to feed butterflies.

There is an area for growing fruit and vegetables.

As you leave, you can take produce and seeds and magazines and leave a money donation. Cooking and eating apples are abundant at the end of August.

Upper Reaches and Bridge

Additional fortification has been added to the Upper Reaches Hotel to stop trespassers. There is no predicted date for when any real work will happen to use this land.

Repairs to Abingdon Bridge are now predicted for about October. The Jubilee flags are still flying as is the Ukrainian Flag from 24th August – Ukrainian Independence Day.

Bank Holiday weekend

The Post Box Topper on Abingdon Market Place has a nautical look. Secret Crocheters Post Box-Toppers have raised £1,279 for charities before this one. Donations for this topper will go to the Great Ormond Street Hospital via https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/secret-crocheter4.

Under Abingdon Bridge, a Salters Steamer called ‘Goring’ steamed away to Oxford this Bank Holiday morning.

In Abingdon this afternoon, the Abingdon Traditional Morris Dancers were dancing outside the Punchbowl.

On Saturday, there was a Balloon and Fireworks Festival at Abingdon Airfield.

On Sunday, there was J-Fest 22 (the music festival accessible to all – not far from Abingdon).
