At St Helen’s Church this morning Mr Crusty the Donkey was there to help with a big Nativity Tableau with lots of young children dressed as angels and shepherds.

On the Market Place there were two other donkeys, Jack and Charlie, also from the Island Farm Donkey Sanctuary.

I see in the recently published book about Pollyanne, from the sanctuary, that Jack arrived very poorly and emaciated, and it was touch and go whether he would make it through the night. His pulling through was a turning point in setting up the sanctuary.

Polyanne was not in town today but has been on previous occasions. There are two pictures inside the book of Polyanne at the Reynolds Way shops. She walked from there to a church service at Preston Road Community Centre. It’s a busy time of year for donkeys.

Abingdon Lock chamber is being renovated.

John sent me a picture of some heavy bags of gravel being lowered into the chamber at the far end.

Barriers are there to stop more water getting in. Floods may have hampered progress but work is underway again.

The lock chamber floor is now covered with bags of gravel. (More pictures soon of the renovation.)

Adfas (Abingdon and District Fine Art Society) had a talk on Beau Brummell at the Guildhall, and there is a production of Pratchett’s Wyrd Sisters at Abingdon College for three days.

During the day I saw one of the Solar Powered Christmas Trees being attached to Goffs, thanks to Abingdon-on-Thames Town Council. I believe they had a budget for 17 energy saving trees.

12/12/12 ended as it began – cold and frosty. The final picture is taken from the walkway across Abingdon Weir.

Family Carol Service causes road chaos in Abingdon

East St Helen Street was blocked by a Co-op lorry earlier this evening. The driver got out of his cab when he could not drive through the parked cars.

Cars stuck behind the lorry then reversed back up East St Helen Street and some of them drove down West St Helen Street the wrong way.

There was a carol service at St Helen’s Church and all the surrounding roads were chock-a-block with parked cars. Parents had desperately tried to get their children to church on time, and many parked wherever they could.
