N-E-W-S and Weather
Today I saw young cricketers at Abingdon Vale Cricket Club being taught spin bowling under a blue sky, while parts of the outfield still lay under water. There has been a third day of sunshine, but the ground is still waterlogged.

Abingdon’s Tour de France

Market Place Events
As well as the Fire Station Book Sale there were plenty more books on the Market Place on the St Nics Church stall, alongside plants, cakes, and a White Elephant’s Stall. On a day like this they had no need of Gazebos.

There was also a cake stall run by the Vineyard Church Youth Club, and the Abingdon Concert Band were entertaining all comers.

2012 is turning out to be a memorable year not just in Abingdon …

Bradley Wiggins has just won the Tour de France. I could find no real Abingdon connection with this momentous event apart from an article about Abingdon’s Tour de France in May 2010. (Abingdon is the house name of the pre-school at St Edmund’s School in Canterbury, and as part of their French week they did a Tour de France round the classroom on trikes. “Going through the mountains was very tricky” said Ethan “As you had to slow down!”)

Big Book Sale and Fire Station Open Day

Big Book Sale
People had donated thousands and thousands of books to the Fire Station Book Sale. Money raised goes to the Fire Fighters Charity.
Big Book Sale
The Fire Station needed a new sign, and could be the first public body to get an Abingdon-on-Thames sign. It was unveiled by the Mayor during today’s Open Day.

Alongside the Mayor are the Fire Station Manager, and the County Council Cabinet Member for Safer and Stronger Communities which includes the Fire Service.
Big Book Sale
There were lots of other things going on for children of all ages, most involving fire station equipment.
Big Book Sale
There was even a chance for people to go up in the lift used to rescue people from high buildings, tackle high up fires, and get aerial views of incident scenes.

We are into the School Holidays and there are predictions that the jet stream is moving north and could take the wet and windy weather with it. Let us hope there is a golden Olympic summer ahead.

(More pictures from the lift in a day or so.)

Java Development in Central Abingdon

Java Development in Central Abingdon
Water has been flowing at the bottom end of Stert Street for a couple of days now – not caused by rain but a leak. Beyond it I see that Coffee Republic has changed to become Java & Co.

Java Development in Central Abingdon
I Googled “Java Abingdon” to find more details but only came up with Java Developer Job opportunities in Abingdon.

The Java programming language runs so many computer applications nowadays, but took its name from a slang term for coffee.

Coffee will still be served at Java & Co.
