Ninja Turtle at Radley Lakes

Ninja Turtle at Radley Lakes
Thanks to Steve for this one. He says “My wife Daphne took this last week at Thrupp Lake (Radley Lakes). The local fishermen blame the absence of fish there on the abundance of Cormorants, but having seen this monster I think he’s to blame. It’s a Red Eared terrapin from North America. Apparently they were all the rage a few years ago during The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle craze. But when people realised how big they got they disposed of them by chucking them in rivers, lakes and ponds. They have a diet of frogs and their spawn, eels, fish, ducklings and eggs.”

A double treat for MG fans

MG Car Rallys
MG fans were able to enjoy not just one but two MG Rallys on the Market Place today – and what a glorious day it was. In the morning there were about 50+ MGs who spent the weekend in Abingdon, supporting local hotels and businesses, and visiting Kimber House and other local sites, before driving off to Bletchley Park.

First time I’d seen one of the new MG6s

or any of these Rover Built MG Super Cars.

The second Rally a few hours later brought a dozen or so Y series MGs built in Abingdon from 1947.

They were here to celebrate their 65th anniversary.

2012 will also be the 50th Anniversary of the MGB, and the MG Car Club want to gets lots of ex MG workers together for the MGB50 event.

Abingdon County Hall Museum Cake

County Hall Museum Cake
There was a goodbye event for Lauren, the museum curator, who finishes on Wednesday. About 60 people attended a reception to thank her for all she has done for the museum. There were speeches by the Town Clerk, and the Chair of the Abingdon County Hall Museum Committee, and a very moving speech by Lauren herself. Then a magnificent cake was unveiled –  made by Elizabeth Mergel (www.cakesbylizmergel.com) who supplies cakes for Throwing Buns.
