First Abingdon Food Festival
Work continues at Abbey House, the former HQ of the Vale of the White Horse District Council (VWHDC). Many VWHDC staff have already been moved to work at the South Oxfordshire District Council’s (SODC) HQ near Wallingford, leaving just front line staff to man the downstairs customer desks at Abbey House. The top two floors are to be taken over by staff from Oxfordshire County Council, and part of the ground floor will be used by the Abingdon Citizens Advice Bureau.

The only planning application so far is for increased ventilation. Natural ventilation will no longer be enough as staff numbers increase from 200 to 394 at peak times with Oxfordshire County Council moving staff in from out of town offices.

As well as the extra ventilation there looks to be a need for a new entrance at the side. That could be where the Citizens Advice will go. Presumably they will get their own air.

First Abingdon Food Festival
The first Abingdon Food and Drink Festival was organised by the Rotary Club of Abingdon Vesper and showcased local producers and vendors on what was a lovely June 1st.

The Miele Experience centre offered their grounds, and their kitchens, and top local chefs put on demonstrations to help raise money for charity.

Outside there were 37 stalls. Pictured above is The Wandering Kitchen, a pop-up mobile restaurant that is to be found in Abingdon every Wednesday evening at Rosie’s Tea Room in West St Helen Street.

One of the main beneficiaries of the event will be the Seasaw Charity ( Their A board is visible on this picture). They provide support to children and young people who have lost a parent.

Kingfisher School were also fund raising with craft tents and Kingo the School Mascot. Kingfisher School supports children with severe special educational needs and disabilities.

The Local Excellence Market, organised by Choose Abingdon, was in town today.

The Mayor of Abingdon-on-Thames, Angela Lawrence, and Councillor Hermann Matheson, were selling wrist bands for next Saturday’s Music in the Park where Angela will be singing the lead in Rule Britannia.

Yvonne, a chocolate artist from Chocolate Tree, was getting people to create their own chocolate decorations.

Q Gardens, up on Milton Hill, are the largest fruit farm in Oxfordshire, and they also grow a lot of veg. They had a fine display of seasonal asparagus.

Designs in Glass helped restore some of the heraldic panels during the refurbishment of Abingdon County Hall. On display they had ornaments, and some of their modern window designs.
