He says “A wide range of flowers and vegetables were exhibited by local gardeners who obtained first class results, despite the strange growing season we all experienced this year.

The club was very pleased to see the high quality of the childrens’ entries and the excellent wines.

The Committee would like to thank all friends and exhibitors who worked so hard to make the day a brilliant success. If you would like to know more about us do contact Ian at ieshepherd@yahoo.co.uk”.

Dragon Boat Racing 2014

Dragon Boat Racing 2014
Around 3,000 spectators were there for the annual Dragon Boat Racing. The event run by the Rotary Club of Abingdon Vesper is one of the high points of the Abingdon Calendar.

Teams of 16 people and 1 drummer, steered by an expert from Dragon Boat Racing, competed for three rounds, and then the three fastest teams raced off in the final.

A lot of the teams wore matching wigs or headgear this year, and the crews had to work hard

driven on by the character beating the drum.

The teams raise money for charity. The M.C. said that one team has raised about £10,000 this year. Rotary Vesper also raise money for its own charity projects such as Canal boat trips for disabled, and Micro Credit in Uganda.

The event also has fair ground rides, and stalls including one for that had recharable (sic) power packs for any mobile phone.

On what was a hot and thirsty day the beer tent did very well. It was a great day, and well organised by the Abingdon ‘Vespers’ Rotary Club. They meet in the evening. The other Abingdon Rotary Club meets in the day.

An Exhibition of Abingdon People who served in World War 1

An Exhibition of Abingdon People
People have been working hard putting together an exhibition of people who served in WW1, alongside the 1914-18 Roll of Service. It is in the Community Shop, Bury Street. Some displays are are of families like the Hudsons …

and the Kings…

Other displays are of people by street. There is: East St Helen Street, West St Helen Street, Ock Street, The Vineyard etc.

This is mostly thanks to Elizabeth Drury and Jackie Hudson and the Library, but also thanks to people who have donated pictures.

The exhibition will be open next week from Monday to Friday 10-4. Then some of it will move back to the Library. This has been arranged as part of Heritage Open Days which is next weekend.

By the way the Vintage Music Fair, with the gold fly posters, has been organised completely independently of Heritage Open Days. The people organising it were told that Heritage Open Weekend was a busy weekend in Abingdon and decided to try staging an event at the same time. Hopefully it will mean there is something to please everybody.

Schools are back. On Monday, in Oxfordshire, there was an inset day for teachers. There is much to learn as the primary curriculum is having a radical shake up as the UK tries to emulate the world’s highest achieving schools. Details of the curriculum are on The School Run. Some quick headlines … Computing replaces ICT, with a greater focus on programming. Calculators will not be introduced until near the end of KS2, to encourage mental arithmetic. A language will become mandatory in KS2.

By today, Thursday 4th September, all the pupils had gone back for the year 2014/15.
