Who knew it was International Go Skateboarding Day last week?

The Mayor of Abingdon-on-Thames did. Mayor Margaret Crick is pictured here at the ‘SKATE THE SOLSTICE’ event – organised as a skateboarding fundraiser in aid of ‘SKATEISTAN.’

The event was well attended by staff at the Culham Science Centre and raised a total of £450 for this Berlin based charity.

Spirit
The Abingdon company Morland and Co Limited (brewers, maltsters and spirit agents and manufacturers of aerated, mineral, and other waters, hotel keepers, licensed victuallers etc.,) no longer exist. However their memory lives on in Abingdon in the converted brewery buildings (now houses and flats), plaques, and engraved windows. The window above is to be found in the Brewery Tap public house, situated at the entrance of the former brewery. The Tap have a large range of beers and are currently Oxford CAMRA (Campaign for Real Ale) Town Pub of the Year 2017.

The Tap is also known for its spirit range with plenty of whiskys, rums, and gins. Spirits are the most powerful alcohol drinks, where distilling brings the alcohol content way above what is possible by fermentation of yeast.

The Local Excellence Market was on the Market Place today. There are four of these a year. The last one, three months ago, was threatened by snow.

It was the weather for strawberries and cream with Wimbledon only two days away.

The candle, and chocolate stalls had to cancel. It was so hot that their products would have melted.

Abingdon Country Market were there. They have a monthly market at the Salvation Army in St Helen’s Street on the 2nd Saturday of each month, and so the Local Excellence Market gave them two markets in June.

Also lots of people enjoying the Coffee culture here in Abingdon.

England’s last 16 match against Columbia is Tuesday evening as the World cup enters the knockout stage. The nails will be kept painted while England are still in the competition.

It will be an achievement of sorts for England to reach the quarter finals for the first time since 2006 – as remembered on this blog.

School is out and Work is out.

For those of us that study or work from Monday to Friday, Friday evening is the high point of the week. There are now two days before study and work begin again.

This was an under-used pub before the current owner took it over. Just shows what can be done.
