Quench – Six Months on in Abingdon

In November 2009 it was announced that with the exception of 100 or so stores that were sold as going concerns all of the remaining stores of First Quench Retailing Limited were to cease trading. That included two “The Local” Off Licences and one “Thresher” Off Licence in Abingdon.
Londis Vineyard
Londis has recently opened on the Vineyard and is the first ex-Quench shop to re-open. Well done to them and thanks to Jones who told me they were coming. They are just by the bus stop.
Off Licence Ock Street
The Local on Ock Street is currently being fitted as an Off Licence – name yet to be revealed. Also near a bus stop.

The ex Threshers on Peachcroft has planning permission to be turned into a licensed betting office. To be continued.

Stung, but all is not lost

This could be the last picture from my old camera – showing stinging nettles by the River Ock. I think I lost the camera in the Albert Park today.

So the pictures I took today and my camera are lost. 🙁

Last Monday there was just bare earth where a bungalow had been demolished on Norman Avenue. A week later a whole new house has been built.

The house was then given a traditional German House Blessing – which includes a toast by the architect. Thanks to Brigid at My Ecobuild for the picture.

Big Charity Shop

Charity Shop Inside
Abingdon’s biggest ever charity shop opened at the start of February. They say money raised will go towards the “Help For Heroes” charity.

Open from Monday to Saturday between 10am and 3pm the charity warehouse sells furniture, clothes, books, CDs and DVDs, bric-a-brac etc. from off the Drayton Road.

Trading Estate Sign
The Charity shop is run by the Kathryn Turner Trust in Unit 3 of the Ashville Trading Estate. Up to about a year ago there were a few empty properties here. EBI foods, Bach Flower Remedies, Unique Distribution, and Debenhams had been well known names here.

But now it has filled up again. Another notable business is The Loose Canon Brewing Ltd. – Abingdon’s newest brewer.
Allparts 1
The last two units have just been taken by Allparts, a retailer and distributor of Automotive Parts.
Allparts 2
They have been fitting out and stocking the warehouse over the last week, and are in the middle of a publicity drive to let people know.

Italian Market

Italian Cheese at the Market
We got some of this strangely shaped Caciocavallo cheese at the Italian Market in town today. The London-based market travels around the UK throughout the year bringing a taste of Italy to the provinces, and this is the second year it has been to Abingdon.
Italian Olives at the Market
We also bought a mix of olives, stuffed vine leaves and artichokes from this stall. Food on sale is produced in Italy and represents many different Italian regions. Only the bread is baked in London.
Italian Market with balloons
Costa had a display of balloons round their tables that complemented the Tricolor Market Stalls.
