Flood Fair

The Town Council is organising a “Flood Fair” to be held at the Guildhall on Thursday 24th October 2013 from 6 pm to 8 pm.

Flooding has been a problem in the town in the past, and with the winter approaching the Town Council are organising an event at which people will be able to find out “What You Can Do In The Event Of A Flood.”

At the Flood Fair they are bringing together a number of organisations who can give people practical advice on how to prepare for flooding and how to protect your property.”

These pictures were taken during the floods in July 2007 – an exceptional event that affected a large number of properties in Abingdon.

As well as the practical measures individual property owners can take there is still the need to work together – like the Ock Valley Flood Group, and to campaign for better flood defences for Abingdon – like the South Abingdon Flood Action Group.

It Rained and Rained at The Runaway Fair

Because of The Runaway fair, the High Street was closed for a day, and traffic diverted down East St. Helen Street and up West St. Helen Street. Larger lorries had to make an even bigger diversion. Security people and town council staff manned the barriers.

It rained and it rained, and the Runaway Fair was a much quieter event than the larger Michaelmas Fair last week. Traditionally they are a week apart.

But all the lights were on and the stall holders made it look as jolly as possible. Quite a few children braved the rain to enjoy this lower key event.

Pub and Beer Prizes for two recent arrivals in Abingdon

In the latest edition of the Oxfordshire Drinker six pubs were nominated for the best CAMRA (Campaign for Real Ale) pub in Oxfordshire. Two were in Abingdon.

I hear that the winner is The Nags Head in Abingdon. They are yet to have their 1st Anniversary, when there will be a beer festival (1-3 Nov).

Meanwhile, the Loose Canon brewery have two winning beers (Abingdon Bridge, and Gunners Gold) in the SIBA (Society of Independent Brewers) competition for the Midland area , and are now through to the national final.

Abingdon can do better at football

Bury Street
Last Saturday Abingdon Town F.C. looked to be doing OK in a 1-1 draw with Bracknell Town.

On Tuesday Abingdon United got their first league win of the season. It looked like things were getting better.

Today things were not so good. Abingdon United were doing OK in the first half. They went down to ten men after a sending off, and continued to play well. However in the second half they looked second best and ended up loosing 5-0.

Abingdon Town also lost 5-0 today away from home.
