Abbey shopping centre – before and after

Precinct Plan In
I read in the Abingdon Herald last Wednesday that the new plans for the redevelopment of the Abbey shopping centre (aka the precinct)  have been submitted. Pictures of before and after are still on display in one of the shops.

To summarise …

Before: flat 1970s roofs, smaller shops with covered walkways and fewer people

After: traditional roofs, larger shops to attract major national chains, with brighter spaces, and more people.  Let us hope it works out well for the sake of Abingdon.

Health and Beauty showcased in Abingdon

Local Excellence
There was another Chamber of Commerce showcase event on the Market Place today where the business theme was Health and Beauty.

Paul Townsend – Chair of Abingdon-On-Thames Chamber of Commerce, and  Heather Brown from the Choose Abingdon partnership were there – fine examples of health and beauty if ever I saw.
Local Excellence
There were about 8 businesses taking part… Acuabi are an Abingdon Chinese medicine and acupuncture clinic operating from Bowyer Road. They have an open day on 12th November when they are offering free taster treatments.

The House of Colour helps analyse what colours suit you and complements your natural colours, and make a very colourful picture.

Beyond Bubbles were there with some of their Abingdon made soaps – normally to be found on Stert Street.

New Notice Board at Reynolds Way shops

New Notice Board
A new noticeboard has appeared at Reynolds Way shops, near the murals – a place where it hs always been difficult to display information about community events. The cost of the notice board was probably more than doubled by planning application costs. It is not that the district council are making money out of such community projects, but each planning application has to be fairly considered to find whether there are any objections that are against local planning regulations …

  • Letters asking for comments were sent out,
  • Documents needed compiling and loading to the internet,

New Notice Board

  • Site visits and an officer report had to be written and presented at the Abingdon area development control committee.

The planning application went through and so the noticeboard is now there, thanks to Sovereign Vale Housing and SARP.

To get your community information on that space, try dropping it in at …

Bags or Bins

Most houses in Abingdon are served by wheelie bins as part of the recently introduced waste processing system.
New Bags
Other houses, like this one on Ock Street, have bags instead. They had a delivery  today – possibly only the second time this has happened.  They are mostly houses without rear access.

I would guess the projected cost of the bags will become more than the cost of the bins after a certain time. Therefore in the long run the bins become the cheaper, more environmentally friendly, option.
New Bags
A few door away, in the Brewery Development, wheelie bins have become a permanent feature  at the front. Here rear access is difficult but not impossible.
