Dairy Barns to Christ Church

Dairy Barns to Christ Church
Back in the 1950s a group of Christians wanted to create a church in the expanding housing developments of North Abingdon. They took over a dilapidated tithe barn in Northcourt, that had been part of a dairy, and restored it sympathetically for use as a church building. It is now the building for a growing church – Christ Church in Northcourt.

People from Christ Church in Northcourt then went on to set up a second church in Long Furlong, a little further north, where Abingdon housing had expanded in the 1980s.

In the last couple of years Christ Church has taken over the remainder of the dairy barns and this year are restoring the largest barn for use as a coffee shop and community space.

Sun Shines on Church Olympics

I did see a report recently about the inter school olympics in Abingdon.
Church Olympics
Another less publicised event, last weekend, was the church olympics in the Albert Park – where St Helen’s, St Nicolas and St Michael’s churches held a picnic and Olympics challenge in Albert Park.

The Rector of Abingdon, the Revd Dr Charles Miller, can be seen trying his hand at the javelin.

There was also a picture of Clare, the Revd Jane Baun and Tony from St Nicolas Church sharing a high-five after winning silver in the jug-of-water race.

Thanks to Tony, for the report. He says “The sun shone.”

Abingdon Artists Exhibition – Open

Abingdon Artists Exhibition - Open
The Abingdon Artists usually stage two exhibitions a year, and their summer exhibition runs from 23 Jun- 30 Jun (10:00 – 17:00) at St Helen’s Church.

St Helen’s Church is well known for being as wide as it is long. Since the redevelopment a few years ago that extra width in the Outer South Aisle can be used – flexibly – either for adding chairs for services or concerts, or for refreshments, exhibitions, charity sales, or lectures.

The art exhibition takes place in that south aisle, and is open all week.

This is also a good chance to look round the rest of the church building whether you are new to St Helen’s or not . The painted ceiling – from around 1390 – of the chapel off the North Aisle must be seen.

Mince pies and carols invitation …

Mince pies and carols
This morning instead of their normal church at Preston Road Community Centre the Vineyard Church took church out and invited people for Carols and Mince pies on the green at Reynolds Way.

Also on a less traditional church note, Revd David from Abingdon Baptist Church came to Trinity Church last Sunday.  He gave out invitations to coffee, mince pies, and carols at Coffee Aroma, Abingdon High Street from 18:45 – 19:45 on Thursday 15th.  All are very welcome …

Here is a fuller Church In Abingdon Christmas What’s On if you want more than mince pies and carols.
