The Nags Head Inn, on Abingdon Bridge, is currently getting the roof re-layed.

I am guessing from the previous underlay that this is the first time in a long time.

I have a postcard of the Nag’s Head, posted in 1916 but it could be taken years earlier. It came in the post today thanks to Ebay. All rights are reserved to the publisher A.E.H London if they or their successors still exist.

The Pub sign has large writing so it is easy to read.

A young family stand in the middle of the road, and behind them, where The Chinese Takeaway is now, is a large sign for an establishment called The Bridge. The writing beneath cannot be deciphered at this distance. But I will pop into the Library tomorrow and see if the local history section can tell me any more.

Walk by the River
Back to school this week for many. Clarkes shoe shop in Abingdon was busy the weekend before last. The barbers were busy last weekend and I ended up queuing in both.

Unlike previous weeks, there were not many families in the Abbey Meadow play area this evening. A couple were eating a large packet of crisps gazing out over the weir. A man was looking down the river from the Abingdon Lock fence.

We walked on, and as we looked back the man, and the crisp eaters were still there gazing at the River Thames. I took this view of the County Hall Museum seen through the lights on Nags Head Island.

Then this one of the sky with the clouds in long furrows. We bought the Abingdon Herald from the Co-op on the way home and looked first at the two page feature of the Wallingford Bunkfest last weekend.

What a remarkable event that is – taking over the town centre for three days.
Heritage Day and more
On the Market Place on Saturday there were stalls promoting Heritage Open Day,, the Kennington Memory Club, and The Lighthouse Church in Abingdon.

There is not as much happening over Heritage Weekend this year as usual. Things will be back to normal in 2019. However there is a chance to find out about the developing plans for the Abbey Buildings. The architect will give an illustrated talk on Friday 7th September at 7.30pm in the Unicorn Theatre.

Then Saturday 8th – Sunday 9th September 10.00 – 4.30pm the Abbey buildings will be open for people to explore, find out about their history, and ask about the plans on display.
The Friends of Abingdon have Heritage walks from the Market Place from 10:30 on Saturday 9th. Visit their walks page for information.
Christ’s Hospital Hall will also be open on Saturday 9th September. That is the ancient hall at the centre of Long Alley Almshouse near St Helen’s Church.

The Kennington Memory Club had a tombola on the Market Place

and a big jumble sale in St Nicolas Church. The Memory Club is the new day centre for people with dementia.
