Streetlife – the new local internet forum

Street Life comes to Abingdon
People in Abingdon recently received a letter addressed to ‘The lovely person who lives at … (your address)’

It was to tell them of a new internet forum which has been launched in our area streetlife.com.

It is very like Facebook but, whereas on Facebook you see what your friends are saying, on Streetlife you see what people in your neighbourhood are saying.

So you can choose to follow all or any of the following:
Abingdon
Northcourt
Caldecott
Wildmoor
Shippon
Radley Park
Culham
Sunningwell
Gozzard’s Ford
Radley

A media company called Archant, together with partners, run the enterprise, and are rolling it out nationally. The site will generate revenue from targeted local advertising.

So it will be interesting to see how the forum develops. Already a few local groups have started promoted themselves through the forum: including Abingdon Hydro and the Breakaway Club. People with a common interest, such as paper crafting or finding a reading group are finding each other. There was a lot of talk of ghosts in Abingdon’s old houses – always a good one to break the ice. And a resident from Spring Road is encouraging locals to join the British Legion (only £20 annually).

Another Snowy Start. Schools were Open

Schools Open as Usual
The Oxfordshire County Council’s web site did not show any schools closed because of snow today. Pictured is Carswell School.

Larkmead’s school web site said:
Snow – Larkmead School is open as usual.

It also said “OFSTED Inspection – We have been informed that Larkmead School is to receive an OFSTED inspection on Tuesday 3rd February and Wednesday 4th February.”

Outside the Unicorn School a banner says ‘Ofsted 2012: OUTSTANDING in all areas‘. That’s the way to do it!

Abingdon must have more salt bins per head of population than your average town, but there were still some slippery places on roads and pavements.

I saw one boy come off his bike near this spot. He limped a few paces before getting back on the bike and setting off again.

Abingdon Lock Maintenance Work – Phase 2

Lock Maintenence Work
Abingdon Lock is having maintenance work done this winter.

Two years ago the lock was emptied of water and the lock chamber was relined.

This winter the lock gates are being taken away and strengthened. The upper gates have already been done.

The lower gates have been taken away and will return before the end of the month.

As there are no boats and no floods this winter the Lock Keeper has been clearing the wild area behind the lock. He has been pollarding trees and making fences from the wood, and intends to create wild flower banks on that side.

It will be very interesting to see how it looks in the months to come.
