Pokémon Craze hits Abingdon

Play and Activity Day
On Friday evening I was taking a picture of Abingdon County Hall when 3 young lads came near aiming their smart phones at a point nearby. I could not see what rare Pokémon they were trying to catch as Pokémon are not visible on my camera.

The official Pokémon website explains: “As you move around, your smartphone will vibrate to let you know you’re near a Pokémon. Once you’ve encountered a Pokémon, take aim on your smartphone’s touch screen and throw a Poké Ball to catch it. Be careful when you try to catch it, or it might run away!”

Abingdon Play and Activity Day in Southern Town Park

Play and Activity Day
The Abingdon play and activity day returned to Southern Town Park today. It was organised by the Oxfordshire Play Association and the Vineyard Church, and there were lots of other groups taking part

There was drumming and creative stalls… a go cart track on the basket ball court …

Winnie the Witch was there with Wilbur the cat …

there were bubble making wands, and bubbles you could roll about in…

a bike that made smoothies, and much much more.

Also good to hear of moves to try to save the South Abingdon Children’s Centre. There was a meeting last week on that very subject that included the Play Association.

Abingdon Town FC – Is this the end of Oxfordshire’s Oldest Club?

Abingdon Town FC
There are rumours that Abingdon Town FC have folded, as they had not re-registered in the North Berks League this season, and the grass is not cut at a time when most teams are playing friendlies before the start of a new season.
Abingdon Town FC
The club were founded in 1870, making it the oldest club in Oxfordshire. Until recently they were playing in the semi-professional Isthmian League and the Hellenic League Premier division.

Their Culham Road ground often floods, repeatedly causing damage to floodlights and pitch and buildings. Two years ago they relegated themselves to the North Berks League, to make ends meet. So it could be that has not helped contain costs, and they have called it a day. But we will see.

Edible Abingdon @ Old Station House

Dig For Victory
Last Year Edible Abingdon was in a strip of land behind the Ice Cream kiosk at the Outdoor pool. This year Edible Abingdon has a site near Old Station House where a number of old-style recycling bins (the ones we used before wheelie bins took over) have been used to grow a variety of herbs, beans, marrows and other edibles.

The objective of the project is to encourage more people in the community to grow some of their own food, and reduce dependence on fossil fuels and imported food.
