There are rumours that Abingdon Town FC have folded, as they had not re-registered in the North Berks League this season, and the grass is not cut at a time when most teams are playing friendlies before the start of a new season.
The club were founded in 1870, making it the oldest club in Oxfordshire. Until recently they were playing in the semi-professional Isthmian League and the Hellenic League Premier division.
Their Culham Road ground often floods, repeatedly causing damage to floodlights and pitch and buildings. Two years ago they relegated themselves to the North Berks League, to make ends meet. So it could be that has not helped contain costs, and they have called it a day. But we will see.
For more on what could have been Abingdon Town FC’s last match read Laurence Reade’s blog post Fade Out.
Very sad, if true. It was my youngest son’s first proper football ground when hey had a small cup run in our first year in the town and I also remember running the line in a pre-season friendly. They should do what Banbury United have done and turn to supporter ownership
Agreed Vox, I remember watching the team in the early 90’s playing the likes of Stevenage in the Ryman League! with John Harvey Lynch, Hickey & Liam Herbert amongst others! Used to attract a decent crowd also.
Surely there are people around with a vested interest in maintaining Abingdon Town FC’s heritage?
Very sad if this is the case.
Have very fond memories of these days. The club, the supporters and the guys, fantastic!
would be a very interesting reblog to write about them now, huge ambition and going places at the moment
