You may remember how back in December 2011 barriers were put along the top of Stert Street.

We learned later that the River Stert Culvert, beneath the street, needed stabilising, and work was done  in March. This picture was taken at the end of March of an entrance used by workmen to enter the culvert from Old Station Yard.

But two months later, in mid June, the barriers at the top end of Stert Street still remain.

The Bus Stop taking people to Abingdon Hospital is still out of bounds. The Olympic Torch could be in Danger.

It is difficult to know what is going on below the surface. It could be just inter departmental financial squabbling, between the County Council and the Environment Agency, about who pays. Or it could be that the repairs are more complicated than those first thought. Or maybe the barriers just need collecting.

Changes since last Mayor Making in Ock Street

This Saturday the election of the Mayor of Ock Street takes place. According to the book ‘Ock Street Remembered’, by the Ock Street heritage Group, Ock Street housed almost a third of the town’s population in the nineteenth century.They also note that during the slum clearances of the mid-twentieth century much of the traditional character of the street was destroyed. But there are still a large number of businesses.

Since last year there have been a couple of changes to businesses in the street.

In the last month Megabonus who supplied new and reconditioned household appliances have moved out

and a sandwich bar has moved in.

And where the Tattoo parlour was, before relocating to the town centre,  there is now a hairdresser.

It will be interesting how long the union jacks remain. The ones in Stroll-in could remain for much of the summer with the Olympic Flame coming through Abingdon on Tuesday 10 July at 7:30am, and then the Olympics.

Helen and Douglas House have changed their Jubilee window to “Come On England”. England play their first game in the European Championships against France in the next 24 hours.

A quieter weekend on the Market Place (after Jubilee)

Quieter Saturday
On the Market Place yesterday the Abbey Sax were playing. They comprise members of the Abingdon Concert Band now in its 35th year. The full band can be seen at Trinity Church next Saturday at 7:30 pm, performing an evening of film and musical favourites and a rousing Last Night of the Proms Jubilee Finale. Or at the same time at St Helens Church there will be a performance of Carmina Burana with Abingdon and Didcot combined choirs.
Quieter Saturday
The Abbey Baptist Church (down Checker Walk) were giving out free literature – including Jubilee new testaments. They also had a stall at Fun in The Parks.

And Vale House had a stall. They have moved their home for people with Alzheimer’s from Botley to Sandford-on-Thames last year, and by so doing have doubled their capacity, and are now in the middle of a big fund raising drive.

What I did not visit was the Armed Forces Play Day at Dalton Barracks. So I hope there was a good turn out and can feature any pictures you send.
