Inspiring the next generation

Sea Cadets
Thanks to Sue from the Abingdon Sea Cadets for news of their success at Reading waterfront, where Abingdon Sea Cadets won the District Paddlesports Trophy for the fourth year in succession. They now go on the regional championships and possibly the nationals.

Lieutenant Kevin Anderson, the Commanding Officer of Abingdon Sea Cadets, said, “I am delighted with the success achieved by our cadets. It is due to their dedication, commitment and healthy competitive spirit that we have been able to retain the Paddlesports Trophy once again.”

Junior Kayaking gold medallist Ordinary Cadet Mitchell Stock, speaking after his event said, “My arms ache.”

Abingdon Sea Cadets‘ aim is to inspire the next generation and give them the best possible start in life. But like all youth groups they need adult volunteers to help inspire the next generation.

MG Car Show to return to Rye Farm Meadow

Time for a hug
Sunday 7th July will see the return of a dedicated Abingdon Works Car Show to Rye Farm Meadow, just the other side of the River Thames from Abingdon.

In recent years, I believe, the show has been a part of the Abingdon Air and Country Show. So thanks to generous sponsorship, and the help of the The Abingdon Rotary Club, it takes centre stage.
Time for a hug
The objective of the Show is to showcase cars built at the MG Factory in the town. There will  be a funfair, local craft stalls, catering and a beer tent.
Time for a hug
Cars will be able to drive round the old factory test route, a journey Abingdon MGs, built between 1932 and 1980, will have made before.

Time for a hug

Time for a hug
On Saturday Hugless Douglas was in Abingdon, and can be seen here with Mark of Mostly Books.
Time for a hug
There are a number of books about Hugless Douglas.

In the first he tries to find that hug he is after, having just woken from hibernation.

A rock is big but is not that good to hug. Neither is a tree. Nor are some of the following hugs that get very funny: sheep, rabbit, owl etc. …

You will have to read the book to see if Douglas finds that hug.

(Mark Comments: It is worth mentioning that his creator – author and illustrator David Melling – is an Abingdonian, and we can all be very proud of him. Douglas is becoming a global publishing phenomenon!)

Gold Buying Shop Moves Out

Three or four years ago, when this time of low or negative economic growth began, companies appeared in Abingdon buying gold. First they hired space at the Guildhall on Saturdays.
Goodbye Gold Buying Shop
Then to our surprise one of them opened up a gold buying shop on the Market Place.

That shop has just closed – possibly a sign that better economic growth is about to return.
Goodbye Gold Buying Shop
Gold prices have been falling in the last couple of months. Stock prices have been rising.
