Old Gaol Progress – December 2013

A year after the first residents moved into the new apartments next to the Old Gaol, work has begun on refurbishment of the buildings on Bridge Street …

including: the Old Police Station, the one time tourist office and music centre, and some cottages.

The Old Gaol itself will then be converted into 10 rented apartments, with groundfloor restaurants and riverside gardens for the public.

The Abingdon Bridge young people’s centre will move into part of the Old Police Station from one of the cottages.

Abingdon Fire Station is 50 years old next year!

The local fire service moved from the old station in Market Square to the current building in Ock Street in late September 1964.

The current crew are pulling together some information and facts about the local fire service over the last 50 years and plan to have an open day / birthday celebration next year. This is an early advert for that, but more importantly at this early planning stage they would like to appeal to local residents for any information on people / events involving Abingdon Fire Crews over the last 50 years (like the above).

Send anything you have to fireabingdon.blue@oxfordshire.gov.uk . Or tell them next time you meet.

An Early Start on East St Helen’s Street

ER Goffs closed on Bridge Street at 5pm on Friday, and reopened as Simon’s News at 4am this Monday morning – at 2 East St Helen Street.

That is not as early as Pascal over the road who starts baking bread and patisseries at about 2am.

The top end of East St Helen’s Street now has a number of fairly new retail businesses – two are very early starters.
