The local fire service moved from the old station in Market Square to the current building in Ock Street in late September 1964.
The current crew are pulling together some information and facts about the local fire service over the last 50 years and plan to have an open day / birthday celebration next year. This is an early advert for that, but more importantly at this early planning stage they would like to appeal to local residents for any information on people / events involving Abingdon Fire Crews over the last 50 years (like the above).
Send anything you have to fireabingdon.blue@oxfordshire.gov.uk . Or tell them next time you meet.
Just reading a book I have “The history of Abingdon Fire Service 1871-1945. some quotes for your info :-
During the blitz.
“I am directed by the Commander-in-Chef to say that he has been informed of the very good work done by the members of the Abingdon Fire Brigade on HM dockyard on the night of the 10th Jan 1941” Seems our fire brigade were very busy during the second world war :- Birmingham 7 times, Portsmouth 3 times, london 3 times, Bristol & Bath 2 times, and once each at Southampton, Exeter, Leamington and Coventry in one year alone !
And so the good work continues.
Thank you.
Steve, I wonder if those Firemen were as good bathroom fitters, plumbers and tilers as the ones working today!
