MG Remembered

MG Trail
Display boards detailing the history of MG, and the MG in Abingdon, have recently been erected by the Mg Car Club in the small park alongside the River Ock.
MG Trail
It is another place for MG Enthusiasts to visit when they visit Abingdon – the town where MGs were made.

There are also:

  • Permanent MG exhibits in the County Hall Museum, and from Mar 17th – July 20th 2014 a special exhibition of memorabilia celebrating 90 years of the MG Marque.
  • The Boundary house Pub on the Oxford Rd – the former Home of Cecil Kimber who created the MG.
  • The MG Car Club along Cemetery Road.

Anywhere else I have missed?

Honey Pot, Vodafone, Braggs, Outdoor Traders, & Spring Cycle Festival

Honey Pot
Peter sent me a picture showing that the Honey Pot closed their shop last Friday.
Honey Pot
They thank all their customers, and say they will soon be trading on the internet, and will be appearing at local craft fairs. Their shop brightened West St Helen Street for the last five years.
Vodafone
Thanks to Andy for pointing out that there is a planning application for a new Shop Sign on Bury Street next to Greggs, for Vodafone Abingdon.
Braggs
Andy also says that his Grandma, Beryl Bragg passed away on Sunday 30th March. She was the wife of Norman Bragg who owned and ran the Braggs Cycle Shop. She was 99 years old and passed peacefully surrounded by family. The funeral service is on 10th April at 2.30pm at St. Helens Church. It was 100 years ago that Braggs moved into the premises on High Street, where Outdoor Traders now sell bikes.

By the way the Spring Abingdon Cycle Festival is on Sunday 13th April 2014.

2014 Abingdon Head of the River Rowing

Abingdon Head of the River
Members of Abingdon Rowing Club were working in the early hours making preparations, then welcoming and helping crews, for the 2014 Abingdon Head of the River rowing time trials.
Abingdon Head of the River
Rye Farm Meadow, where boats were brought, is still soft in patches having been under water a lot of the winter.
Abingdon Head of the River
The first of 4 divisions left the meadow before 9am to row downstream to the start near Culham weir. There were up to 90 boats in each division.
Abingdon Head of the River
Then at 9:30, 11:45, 14:00, and 16:15 boats raced upstream the 2000 metres to the finishing post, opposite Ferry Boat House on Wilsham Road.
Abingdon Head of the River
On the same day as the University Boat Race, which Oxford were to win, rowers gave their all.
Abingdon Head of the River
At Rye Farm Meadow where crews embarked and disembarked there was beer, homemade cakes, a BBQ, and entertainment by the Abingdon Traditional Morris Dancers.
