Building Work

Building Progress
For years there was just a pile of earth between the motorcycle centre and care home on Marcham Road, but very high flats have replaced the pile of earth.

New retirement flats next to John Mason school are also nearing completion.

At Abingdon College the new training workshop for motor mechanics should be ready for the new college term.

Very difficult to see what is happening behind the stone wall of Our Ladies Abingdon, but a new design and technology centre should also be ready for the new school term.

In Abingdon, “Schools out for summer!”

The Blog will have a short summer break. Back in two weeks.

New shop in the abbey shopping centre – bakery – where the newsagents once was, fitting it out now.

Also, that shop in the corner of the square that was once called “Stroll In” is also being fitted out, but no idea what it may be, if anything?

As this blog is on summer break I thought I’d say how bloody amazing The Broad Face is. Just finished a review of it for a local magazine, the food was fantastic! Had quite possibly the best Carbonara I’ve ever had.

The building work at Stroll In appears to be connected to the white building next door. Always been boarded up windows in it.. I remember a plan to open them up as small studios a few years ago. Nice to see, hopefully back in use soon.

The building next door was always part of Stroll In, it was the back bit where the toys and kitchen stuff was.

… and what about the former “Gold Shop”? It was nicely freshened up when they moved out, but no sign of activity since..

chris all this time I didn’t realise until now……that was the rear of that building!!!!!. makes sense really…

The rooms above The Gold Shop, were used by the adult care unit, (as a backup to the Charter building). The lease was so expensive they couldn’t afford to renew.

They are now waiting to hear about The Charter Phase II, and when they will be moved out of that building. (Demolished for Supermarket).

Just heard that refurbishment work is under way again at the Crown & Thistle – it appears that commonsense prevailed in the end! They plan to re-open in November.

@Hester – good news and I see the old Police Station is being redeveloped for a young persons centre.

Look at all this joy and happiness about Abingdon today! Such a refreshing change.

You can go away with a smile on your face backstreeter 🙂 Enjoy your holiday

@rolf – sorry to dampen the outbreak of joy but unless plans have changed, only a small part of the Old Police Station (including the cells lol!) is being made available for the Abingdon Bridge – most of the building will be flats. Those of us who were involved with the Old gaol campaign a few years ago put in a bid for the whole building to be made available for community use – including maybe arts/crafts studios/workshops upstairs – but to no avail…

But otherwise I agree with Rachel – happiness abounds – and another charty music event in town on Saturday – hope the weather stays fine.

Backstreeter – we do miss you – we want pictures of all these great things!

Read an article about The Abingdon Bridge using part of the Old Police Station, including the cells. Ironic because they help a lot of ex-offenders who have just come out of prison.
or held in Police custody. Its smaller than their previous site, but are hoping it will be more permanent this time.

Before now I’ve flagged up here that it’s Tesco’s plan to turn its large stores into ‘retail malls’ and, in Abingdon’s case, this would mean that Tesco’s car park would become the town’s new market place.

    See this:

Something like this happens in Abingdon and the town centre will be just about banjaxed.

The various councils ‘serving’ Abingdon seem oblivious to this along with the company’s bus service centred on the Marcham Road store.

Planning does not seem the Councils’ forte … they’ve just about pushed me past the point of despair.

Me too – I think Backstreeter should be asked to book his leave in advance in future (statutory amount only – 28 days including bank holidays). More seriously perhaps one or two volunteers could take it over next time he has a long break?

Anyway, I think he is due back any day now……….
