The Old Anchor Inn reopened this evening after a couple of months of inactivity.
The pub is ideal for passing boats. Tie up the vessel, clamber through the railings, and go in for a drink and a meal.
For the rest of us it is just a lovely location: St Helen’s Wharf in Abingdon.
I do hope that the new team find success. The Anchor has a lovely location, but its more recent tenants don’t seem to have been able to keep beer very well, to provide decent food, or to provide a welcoming atmosphere.
When I first arrived here (four years ago), it was a lovely venue for a summer evening’s pint. However, I doubt if there’s a living to be made out of occasional trade like passing boats.
The Anchor deserves to do well, and I shall certainly be dropping in to see how they are getting on. Good luck to them!
Great news – that and that Nags Head are the only riverside places to eat or drink so vital they are open. Also, it is in one of our most attractive historic areas which are being promoted to visitors this summer so should get trade that way.
For us locals there is an update on the great choice of pubs in Abingdon on the Abingdon Beer blog – link from bottom right of this page.
Good news and the view from the top of Wilsham Road across to The Old Anchor and St Helens Church is one of the loveliest in Abingdon
Is it ‘music’ free by any chance?
Good; this is part of one of the finest waterfronts in England; featured on BBC local TV news as a background, but the town completely ignored by the signs on the A34!!
Always good to hear about a pub reopening and not becoming a Tesco!!
I popped in Saturday for a pint and it was a good pint too!
People of Abingdon – it wpuld b great if you could support this pub. It is in such a great position by the river.
Went there Sunday clearly stated they do food from 6-8pm none available!
Went there Monday Closed!
I would love to support it but it has to help itself first.
I’m planning to try it out this week. Glad to hear the beer’s kept well 🙂

Hi,
We do sell food (only tapas at the moment as we are trying to find out what customers like to eat). There will be a main menu soon, but please bear with us as we have opened on the 19th April 2013.
Please come again soon.
Thanks
Adrian Green

Hi,
We will try our very best to cater for all our customers, there will be live music, but not every Saturday. Quiz nights is back on (every Thursday) and Aunt Sally (every Wednesday).
Thanks
Adrian Green
To all blog readers, please pop in and let me know what you would like to see in the Old Anchor Inn (events, clubs etc).
Thanks
Adrian Green
Went last night, waited 10 minutes to be served and then left when barman was serving people who arrived after us. Great pub in a great location but service need to improve.
Hi Gareth, sorry about that. That was me behind the bar, please pop in again and make your way to the bar. Wasn’t sure who I had to serve next as I just changed a barrel.
Thanks
Adrian Green
It’s so good that the Old Anchor has reopened and is better than ever before, with Aunt Sally, darts, good beer, food and live music on Monday and Saturday nights. It’s a little gem of a rarity in Abingdon, finally a good solid old fashioned pub with a welcoming atmosphere.
Thanks for your contents Poly Day. We are so pleased. All we want is to create a welcoming atmosphere and never upset anyone and have a good time 🙂
Adrian & Sonia are the most fantastically genuine people, interested in their customers and what they do, and i can honestly say that this is my favourite pub in Abingdon, all year round, and one of the few remaining local, traditional public houses. Looking forward to spending time there over Christmas and New Year period. :@)
