Hole in St Helen’s Wharf

Umbrellas held Abingdon Style
Last night workmen were prodding with their feet the ground where a softening, and small hole, had developed on St Helen’s Wharf. It is covered over now awaiting repair.

There is now no parking by the Anchor Inn.

I am often suprised at this point by traffic coming the wrong way over the iron bridge – which is intended to be one way.

Perhaps the iron bridge is a good location for one of those cardboard policemen and an automatic camera ?

All inthe name of ‘re-education’ for the generations of cyclists (now motorists) who have been brought up believing that the Highway Code does not apply to them!

Looks like possible failure of the river wall at that point. Just a small crack and the fast flowing water can have scooped out a void behind it.

Actually it IS a two way bridge for cycles. If only we could train the drivers who seem to enjoy blindly slingshoting their cars up round the corner at the church to slow down a bit as they seem to think nothing will be coming the other way just because cars aren’t.

I agree with Pete, especially with the two way issue, i am predominantly a car driver, but on occasion have had to avoid an oncoming car, although I would say perhaps replacing the sign with one of more attention would make drivers more aware.

Snow, thaw and now rain has not helped the region, Just travel around rural roads in of Abingdon and surrounding areas. There are hazards for both cyclists and motorists. British weather… Dont you just love it?

This stretch of road is 2 way for all traffic between the Abingdon side of the iron bridge and the bottom of East St. Helen’s Street. It should be a 10 or 15 MPH zone. It would be great if all drivers of motor vehicles slowed down and kept to their side of the road.

It’s 2 way traffic for cars up until the iron bridge, bikes only across the bridge. Yes, the cars tear round the corner not thinking about us cyclists. How many times have I had to run in the gutter I’d love to know!

I have though, spotted a regular car that drives across the bridge in the evenings ……. pausing before the bridge until he thinks nobody’s about, then nips over and up Wilsham Road.

Quite a lot of drivers do that, and I think they underestimate how dangerous it can be for people coming the other way.

I think the County Council should look at how this stretch could be made safer, either by making it one way all the way round and/or by some redesigning to slow speed and create safer space for cyclists.
