There’s a new shop on the High Street selling fresh food. It’s where Abingdon Sports used to be, and it seems popular already.
They’ve got lots of fruit and veg, most without packaging (you can use paper bags if needed). They also have a butcher’s counter, bread and pastries, cheese and wine, and other groceries on shelves.
The shop is open every day from 7am to 8pm.
I hope they prosper. It’s good to have independent outlets.
Exciting to be able to buy loose fruit, carrots and parsnips again, yes really!
These past few years have found that it’s too easy to buy veg past their best in supermarkets, or with rotten bits because the packaging hides the quality of the vegetables inside.
Visited this shop today nice products and interesting stuff but hardly anything had a price on it.
Not sure I want to go to the counter to ask all the time.
Shame
I agree, everything looks nice, but I was browsing out of curiosity and, tbh, to compare the prices with supermarkets. I want to support a local business, especially if the produce is better, but not at any expense and, unfortunately, this is what killed off the other food independents.
Concerning – maybe they haven’t got round to that bit yet.
I think partly what did for Seeneys pet food shop was the prices, people will pay a bit more for nice things but depends how much more.
Memories of the handwritten signs in black marker in the greengrocers shops when I was a kid 🙂
I don’t think we can expect an independent to match the supermarkets on price as the overheads and lack of scale will make the shop more expensive to run. Hope they do well – the opening hours are interesting – like a healthy version of a convenience store. I’ll be checking them out.
I don’t expect them to match the supermarkets, but they need to be somewhere in the same ball park or they will go the way of the other much lamented stores. I really hope they can succeed though.
