Pictures of Kharkiv in Abingdon Library

On February 20th, 2014, the Russo-Ukrainian War began as Russia pushed into the Crimean Peninsula. On February 24th, 2022, the conflict escalated with Russia launching a full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

At Abingdon Library, a collection of photos by the Oxford Kharkiv Association shows Ukraine’s enduring struggle, particularly in Kharkiv. The images chronicle Kharkiv’s transformation, from peace to war with destruction and rebuilding.

The Oxford Kharkiv Association are a group of volunteers who look to strengthen the links between Oxfordshire and the Kharkiv region.

Our hearts go out to the poor people in Ukraine. I am in agreement with the UK supporting Ukraine. Putin is one of those dictators that if successful will invade other countries. He follows the Russian way of assassinating anyone who apposes him.

Fully agree Janet. The Russian economy is in war mode and Putin’s only option is to expand west wards. The international situation is dangerous and I suspect we will be involved in war or at least a very very Cold War, in the next ten years. Sooner if Trump manages to be elected US President.

Apologies this is not directly Abingdon-related. But in reality it is. We have suffered increased energy bills and high inflation because of Russian expansionism and we are supporting many refugees from Ukraine. How naive our early 90s feelings of an end to European conflict now looks…
