Guildhall transfer complete

The White Horse left the Guildhall building soon after midday on April 1st.

Shortly afterwards, at 12:30, the keys were handed over by the Chair of the Vale of White Horse District Council to the Mayor of Abingdon. The town of Abingdon now owns the building as it did before local government reorganisation in 1974.

Great news – having the Guildhall fair and squarely in the ownership of Abingdon and not having to compete for equal treatment with other towns in the Vale should make it much easier to devise ways to make more effective use of it. It is a bit of a “curate’s egg” – good parts and less good ones – but there are a lot of people around with an interest in making it work for the community and if the Town Council can harness their ideas and willingness to help we should have a facility to be proud of.

I agree with hester – this is good news. The Guildhall is the kind of facility that will do well in local hands. It has great potential to be the hub for a wide range of activities.
