Boat left high and dry

Boat left high and dry
The flood water of the River Thames has receded, and one boat has been left high and dry near Abingdon Lock.

A tree has also become lodged on the top end of Nags Head island. Fields are still damp and muddy and the weekly Parkrun has been cancelled again this week. I will get a good picture when it resumes as there often lots of runners and it is an impressive sight.

Christmas Lights Shine On

It is always good to see the Christmas lights brightening up these cold and dark December evenings.
Christmas Lights
When they were last up, the bus stop at the top of Stert Street had been closed because the River Stert culvert beneath was causing worries. Work was undertaken in 2012 but not enough to allow the bus stop to re-open.
Christmas Lights
High Street has not changed greatly since the Christmas Lights shone in 2011 although there are new shops like ybuynu and OX14 Deli. The opening of Wetherspoon, in Abingdon’s former High Street post office, could have a more dramatic effect.
Christmas Lights
The Christmas lights were mostly replaced four or five years ago by Abingdon Town Council with low energy LEDs.
Christmas Lights
But some of the older generation lights remain, like the Nativity Scene at the top of West St Helen Street.

Last Week Floods. This Week Salt Spreading

Last Week Floods
Michael sent me some pictures at the weekend saying “You don’t seem to have many pictures of the floods at their height so here are some I took on Wednesday.”
Last Week Floods
A lone motorcycle in the Carpark near the Cricket Pitch.
Last Week Floods
The kiosk at the open air pool. The waters have gone down since that high point a week ago.
This Week Salt Spreading
Since then Highway Information signs have been telling of “Salt Spreading” and this morning brought the first snow of the season. The picture shows West St Helen Street Carpark at 7:10 am.

Twelve Sheep a Scattered

There was late night shopping till 8 p.m on Stert Street this Tuesday (4th December 2012), and will be again the next two Tuesdays (11th and 18th). In the window of Sweet Chocolate there was a Sheep poster, and inside a little sheep, which reminded me I was sent an email for the Messy Nativity Sheep Trail – part of the Church in Abingdon’s Christmas Celebrations. It said …
Sheep
This flock of sheep will be scattered among 12 of the town centre shops in time for the Extravaganza and will remain there until Saturday 15th December when they will be rounded up and returned to St. Nicolas Church. Each sheep has a name and there will be a competition (organised by some of the local churches) to collect the names and enter for a prize draw which will take place during the Family Service in St. Nicolas’ Church on Sunday 16th December at 11.00am
Sheep
It is worth mentioning that there were more sheep at the Extravagana than just these twelve. Timmy The Sheep was hamming it up down Stert Street
Sheep
And two very early lambs were dozing in Roysse Court.
