Young Peoples’ Community Mural

Community Graffiti
Blog Action Day is where lots of bloggers worldwide follow the same theme. In 2012 that is The Power of We.

I could think of lots of Abingdon community groups which make a big difference, and examples of People Power. Then last night I got sent these pictures showing young people in the Basketball area in Southern Town Park doing a community mural.
Community Graffiti
Together with the help of a graffiti artist they were improving on the graffiti that had been there before, making it a more friendly place. The graffiti artist first came to work with the young people a few weeks back to work up a design.

PCSOs and the Vineyard Church, who run a youth club in South Abingdon, were also involved making this happen.

On Hearing Johnny Cash and seeing Eiffel Towers at the French Market

French Market
From Thursday to Saturday a French Market filled the Market Place.
French Market
There were a variety of French food stalls. We got some French Cheese, and then went to Patisserie Pascal, an excellent Abingdon shop, open Tuesday to Sunday, for French bread.
French Market
It is always good when a Market brings in products not available elsewhere in town, like the French CD stall.
French Market
I’m a fan of French singers, and although their CDs were on sale, I never heard any of them being played. When I got there we were treated instead with jazz, blues and finally Johnny Cash.
French Market
The stalls included: carpets and mats, scarves and hats, leather bags, and basket bags (from Madagascar), that are probably found at any Market in France but did not strike me as overtly French. The Eiffel Towers, on the toys and souvenirs stall, however did tick all the boxes of my French stereotype.

Apple Day at South Abingdon Children’s Centre

Today was Apple Day, run by the Carbon Cutters, at South Abingdon’s Children’s Centre, next to Cadecott School.

In attendance was the Wild Waste Bus with lots of information on recycling and energy conservation.

There was a chance to try your hand at archery, and if you are interested in taking up this sport email chris_lynn.wilson at virgin.net who is running classes (Tuesday morning at Wootton Community Centre, Thursday morning at Radley Village Hall).

There were the first chance, for me at least, to see the plans for the proposed “Forest School” area which carbon cutters are helping to design and implement in the area of school grounds surrounded by fences. The next stage is to dig out the rather rocky ground to plant a hedge. Funds are needed to make this happen.
Apple Day at South Abingdon Children's Centre
The area behind this stall is already underway and used as an area for children to explore, move logs about, and find wildlife.
Apple Day at South Abingdon Children's Centre
The Mayor of Abingdon visited and met children, and grown-ups.

There were also lots of apples and related activities.

Progress at the Abbey Shopping Centre

Quite a lot has happened in two weeks since the last look at progress at the Abbey Shopping Centre.
Abbey Shopping Centre Progress
The day after that last update I got this shot of the contractors leveling the upper concrete floor (Thanks for this shot).
Abbey Shopping Centre Progress
Today they were placing what looked like large insulating sheets on the roof (they confused me for a bit as I commented on twitter there had been a delivery of mattresses).
Abbey Shopping Centre Progress
Today it rained most of the time so it was NOT good to work outside, and probably not that good either for the French Market – with us from Thursday to Saturday.
Abbey Shopping Centre Progress
Flat roofs are out, and gable ends are in, above the existing units of the Abbey Shopping Centre.
Abbey Shopping Centre Progress
The large tree near Superdrug has had a lot of micro surgery round its roots to put in new services. The leaves will soon be falling, from autumn and not from being killed.
Abbey Shopping Centre Progress
Meanwhile new block paving has started to be laid adjacent to Costa. Amazingly the shops still continue to trade with all of this building work going on. Another update soon I’m sure.
