Abingdon Library has started up a Public Wi-Fi Service this week. This will allow the public to use their own wireless devices (laptops, PDAs and smart phones) in the surroundings of Abingdon Library.

This follows a successful pilot at Oxford Central Library.

At the Miele Experience Centre – the closest thing Abingdon has to a Nasa Space Centre – Choose Abingdon organised this evening’s “Good Living” event.

There were chances to try free samples from a lot of local producers … wines from The Bothy Vineyard – just 2 miles outside Abingdon …

spicey savouries from Abbey Foods … chocolate cake from Rosie’s Tea Room…

I was too late to squeeze into a demo by Fabulous Flowers, but instead I talked with Lendon and Dawn from The Barwell Gallery. The racehorse picture “Nice and Easy” is by Lendon.

I caught up on the progress of Abingdon Town Council who are organising what could be one of the biggest Jubilee street party in 2012 – on Ock Street, Abingdon

The evening ended with a draw to win a Miele Vacuum. The winner will be getting a call very soon.

Back in the middle ages the impending end of the world was a hot topic. Some believed it would occur during the 13th century. The date was first put at 1260, and then revised when that date came and went.
This illustrated manuscript in the British Library, in London, dates from that time of excitement in the 13th Century. I am not sure where the manuscript was created but it is called The Abingdon Apocalypse because of a note on the fly leaf first in French then translated into English which is supposed to say “This book is loaned to Dame Joan, by the grace of God Queen of Scotland by the abbot and convent of Abingdon… .’
The complete manuscript is at the British Museum in London. To see some apocalyptic illustrations follow this link and look around … The Abingdon Apocalypse .
