Stert Street Bus stop closed … No reason given

Please Accept Our Apologies
The bus stop at the top of Stert Street has been shut for a few weeks now. The stop is used by the Abingdon Town Bus service on its route round and through Abingdon. The barriers stretch some way beyond the bus stop, and also have the effect of not allowing people to cross the road before the designated crossing.
Please Accept Our Apologies
The notice at the stop says “Please accept our apologies for any inconvenience.”  The our in this sentence is Oxfordshire County Council who must have their reasons but no reason is given.

Has there been a serious incident at or near this stop ? Are they just checking out whether the traffic will run more smoothly without a bus stop? Does work need to be done on the path?

Somebody will know.

Radiohead and Alphabet Backwards – New Abingdon music from 1986 and 2012

There are Radiohead fans who visit Abingdon and wonder why the town has not erected a fitting monument to the group who started life at Abingdon School. Here is just such a visit to Radiohead’s home town.

Two videos today … A new one recorded in the Unicorn Theatre in Abingdon by Alphabet Backwards – with flowers by Fabulous Flowers .

The other a recently discovered demo CD from Radiohead’s early days at Abingdon School when they used to be called “On A Friday”.

Radiohead will be doing a stadium tour this year so I’m not sure we can book them for the Unicorn Theatre

There is no better tribute to Radiohead than that Abingdon has two guitar shops and there are good groups still starting off in Abingdon.

Relaying the old East St Helens Street pavement

OIld Pavements
The 11 week project to repave East and West St Helen Streets has begun. The start point is outside Patisserie Pascal, and coincides with a few days of well deserved holiday for Pascal (vacances bien méritées).

It looks as if most of the existing paving stones are being relaid – which must be a good thing.
OIld Pavements
The irregular paving stones lower down the street will only fit back one way – if they do need doing.
OIld Pavements
Over time the pavement has gained a certain foot worn character that goes well with the historic street.

Tesco Express and Best One soon to be neighbours

David v Goliath
Work has been continuing over the weekend at the building previously known as the Ox Pub , to turn it into a Tesco Express. The opening date must be imminent.

Chiller cabinets can be see where there once was a bar.

Best One, a family run convenience store,  two doors down, with just The Magic Wok separating their business from the new Tesco Express, will soon know the effect on their trade.
