The Abingdon Horticultural Society held their Spring Show at the Northcourt Centre on Saturday 5 April. Ian sent some pictures and a report…
Spring Show
The long wet Winter has caused problems for many of us, yet the minimal frost and high temperatures have encouraged the flowers and plants to yield early results. In fact, many of us have found that the early blossoms mean our favourite candidates for the Show were in their prime too soon. The essence of exhibiting is timing, and that played a big part this year.

We had an excellent turn out for our Show, and the entries far exceeded last year’s participation. There were 36 (23 last year) members who exhibited with 189 (133) entries.

MG Remembered

MG Trail
Display boards detailing the history of MG, and the MG in Abingdon, have recently been erected by the Mg Car Club in the small park alongside the River Ock.

It is another place for MG Enthusiasts to visit when they visit Abingdon – the town where MGs were made.

There are also:

  • Permanent MG exhibits in the County Hall Museum, and from Mar 17th – July 20th 2014 a special exhibition of memorabilia celebrating 90 years of the MG Marque.
  • The Boundary house Pub on the Oxford Rd – the former Home of Cecil Kimber who created the MG.
  • The MG Car Club along Cemetery Road.

Easter Party in Albert Park

Easter Party
This is the 6th year that the Vineyard Church (based at Preston Road Community Centre) have run an Easter Party in Albert Park, with egg and spoon racing, football, tug-a-war, and a bunny hunt ( pictures taken during the bunny hunt).

The event is entirely free to make it accessible to anyone in the community; 100 children entered the bunny hunt each receiving a boxed Easter egg.

The Vineyard Church also have Easter Arts & Crafts at Preston Road Community Centre on Sunday 13th April from 10:30 – all free.

Abingdon Museum also has Easter Craft making on the 8th and 9th April 10.00 – 14.00.

Honey Pot, Vodafone, Braggs, Outdoor Traders, & Spring Cycle Festival

Honey Pot
Peter sent me a picture showing that the Honey Pot closed their shop last Friday.

They thank all their customers, and say they will soon be trading on the internet, and will be appearing at local craft fairs. Their shop brightened West St Helen Street for the last five years.
Vodafone
Thanks to Andy for pointing out that there is a planning application for a new Shop Sign on Bury Street next to Greggs, for Vodafone Abingdon.
Braggs
Andy also says that his Grandma, Beryl Bragg passed away on Sunday 30th March. She was the wife of Norman Bragg who owned and ran the Braggs Cycle Shop. She was 99 years old and passed peacefully surrounded by family. The funeral service is on 10th April at 2.30pm at St. Helens Church. It was 100 years ago that Braggs moved into the premises on High Street, where Outdoor Traders now sell bikes.

By the way the Spring Abingdon Cycle Festival is on Sunday 13th April 2014.
