Blackberries can be foraged in a large number of locations in Abingdon at the moment.

The next crop are being pollinated by some very helpful insects. What would we do without them?

Other helpful insects are tucking into the fruit that is too ripe for human consumption

Mix oats, honey, and desiccated coconut. Cook in the oven until crisp. Put in the bottom of a desert dish. Cover with a layer of uncooked blackberries. Cover blackberries with crème fraîche. Puree some cooked blackberries and put on top.

Put any left over blackberries in the freezer.

Fish and Chips
The original British Takeaway still has two or three outlets in Abingdon.

For the moment there is no Fish and Chips takeaway in Abingdon Town Centre. New owners took over Smarts Fish & Chips and they seemed to be doing OK. So I am not sure what is now happening behind the screen.

Smarts on Peachcroft are still there open as usual.

As are Salami’s on Ock Street.
Edible Abingdon

Behind the kiosk of the open air swimming pool there is a small area of edible plants.

It is amazing to see how many different edible plants the Abingdon Carbon Cutters have managed to grow in such a small area. Lettuces are in season, and you can pick your own.

The wild flower meadow nearby is also blooming.

That is another project of Abingdon Carbon Cutters – with their “local response to climate change.”
Abingdon Food Festival

The first Abingdon Food and Drink Festival was organised by the Rotary Club of Abingdon Vesper and showcased local producers and vendors on what was a lovely June 1st.

The Miele Experience centre offered their grounds, and their kitchens, and top local chefs put on demonstrations to help raise money for charity.

Outside there were 37 stalls. Pictured above is The Wandering Kitchen, a pop-up mobile restaurant that is to be found in Abingdon every Wednesday evening at Rosie’s Tea Room in West St Helen Street.

People relaxed with their food and a drink on the green in the sun.

One of the main beneficiaries of the event will be the Seasaw Charity ( Their A board is visible on this picture). They provide support to children and young people who have lost a parent.

Kingfisher School were also fund raising with craft tents and Kingo the School Mascot. Kingfisher School supports children with severe special educational needs and disabilities.
Entry for the Zest June 1st theme on the City Daily Photo.
