Air Ambulance at Caldecott Rec.

Thanks to Collette for this picture of an Air Ambulance taking off from Caldecott Recreation Ground in South Abingdon yesterday at 9:44am. Somebody was taken ill and the recreation ground was the nearest place to land.

The Air Ambulance may have been an exciting event for children on half term school holidays, but it was also an emergency.

Abingdon is not unfamiliar with Air Ambulances. One gave a display at The 2013 Abingdon Air and Country Show, and the show gave its profits to the Air Ambulance Trust – £9,300 in 2013.

The next Abingdon Air & Country Show is Sunday 4th May 2014 and preparations are well underway.

Stand up to Cancer with Penny Clover the Town Crier

Can I thank Cancer Research UK for sending pictures of their Stand Up To Cancer event held outside the Cancer Research UK shop in Bury Street on Sat 19th Oct. Here they are belatedly.

Stand Up To Cancer is an annual fund-raising event organised by Cancer Research UK nation wide. All the shops are encouraged to take part and organise local events and raise money for life saving research. Cancer Research UK in Abingdon decided to Stand Up (and Shout) to Cancer with the help of Town Crier Penny Clover.

Abingdon shoppers were encouraged to ring the bell and have a go themselves. Everyone had a great time and they raised just under £500 and left a lot of signatures. That picture of the signatures I’m saving for November 1st (City Daily Photo Theme Day : Heights).

Splash of Pink

Last night in preparation for the Splash of Pink event on the Market Place, the County Hall was given a splash of pink.

Today there were a lot of pink stalls on the Market Place. Staff from the the Crown and Thistle (re-opening day soon) were there helping raise funds for Against Breast Cancer, the Abingdon based charity.

Buying and selling pink cakes was very popular.

Throughout the day a number of groups performed. Abingdon Music Centre Community Choir were out in force with Helen Eccleston playing keyboard and conducting.

Mr Hemmings Traditional Abingdon Morris Dancers danced with a pink ribbon round their hats, and in one particular dance were joined by a penguin.

Ashnah did some belly dancing.

In the gazebo nearest Costa an attempt was made on the world record of putting on and taking off a bra over a T shirt. I was too shy to take any pictures of, or take part in, that particular event but believe a new world record was set – ten bras in a minute. The video evidence will be sent for verification before the record is officially recognised.

Shop Window Competition Result and Preview of Splash of Pink Saturday

Thanks to Richard Bahu for sending me some information about this years Splash of Pink in Abingdon.

Abingdon shops have decorated their windows in Pink in support of Against Breast Cancer charity based in Abingdon as part of Breast Cancer awareness month.

Last Friday 18th Dwina Gibb, Patron of the charity and widow of Bee Gees’ Robin Gibb, judged the windows and Smiths Chemist won the cup.

Abingdon museum will for the first time ever be illuminated in pink on Friday 25th evening at 5pm onwards. I will be there for the photo opportunity.

Splash of Pink day is 26th October in the Market Square with fun for all the family including food, mulled wine, music, Morris and belly dancers, Abingdon Community choir, Abingdon Operatic Society, Abngdon dance studio, Abbey Sax, bouncy castle, cake stall including a cake baked by Christine from the Great British Bake Off, face painting, tombolas and raffles.

On 26th Splash of Pink will be hosting Abingdon’s first ever official Guinness World Record attempt “Most bras worn and removed in one minute” from 11.00-14.00. Open to all men and women (over a T-shirt).
