Both the Head of the River rowing, and the Home Guard at Abingdon Lock have been cancelled because of the wet conditions. Here is a video showing some of the recent water from the River Thames and River Ock, mostly shot at various weirs.

Morland Gardens at two thirds full

The Morland Gardens development is about two thirds complete and looks very good. I have just been reading what Taylor Wimpey have to say about the development and our town …
Surrounded by trees and hedgerows, Morland Gardens is a new development located on the southern edge of the lovely market town of Abingdon.
For the weekly shop, you can choose from Waitrose or The Co-operative both within 1.5 miles from Drayton Road and other supermarkets a little further from home.
For all your retail therapy needs, visit The Orchard Centre and the Clarendon Centre, both less than 10 miles from your door. There is a lovely selection of pubs and restaurants in the town.

The last third of Morland Gardens to be developed is adjacent to what was the southern edge of Abingdon.

This road could have been called The Rookery, but the road names chosen are King Street, Bowler Gardens, and Thomas Way. The link could be from the WW1 Abingdon Roll of Honour …
KING, Percival Arthur
THOMAS, Albert
BOWLER, Edward John
Unless anybody knows better.
Fairacres news and half news

Visiting the Fairacres Retail Park at the weekend I see that shop fitting is underway in what was Beales. There is an application for Hammonds, a fitted furniture retailer, to put up their signs. I am not sure if Hammonds will take both units. I did hear at the barber on Saturday that part of it will be a carpet shop but have not seen anything definite.
The Phase 2 development of Fairacres has planning permission and will be started in 2019 where Homebase and AHF Furniture now are. Permission was given for one of the new units to sell food. The name M&S Food was cited in the planning application but we now know that looks more likely to be Aldi.

Carpetright have just made an announcement that they are restructuring and that will mean store closures. Not sure if that will affect Abingdon…
River Thames has broke its banks near the Outdoor Pool

Work continues on the Outdoor Swimming Pool. The sign may say ‘Danger Deep Water’ but the pool area is the one area where there will be no deep water.

A lake has formed on the normally dry land beside the pool but the pool itself has been surrounded by a canopy to keep it dry.

The £1.3 Million refurbishment is running to plan at a time when daffodils that survived the snow are now having to survive a flood.

The rainbow today was a sign that better weather is on the way, but it could be too late for next weekend’s River Thames Events in Abingdon. The rowing on Sunday has been called off, and I got an email that the Home Guard will be called off too. Watch out for further announcements.
