During the week, various groups are present to talk to the public: the Alzheimer’s Society, Dementia Oxfordshire, Carers Oxfordshire, Daybreak, Stowford and Abingdon Court care homes, Soha Housing and Fiddle Fingers Quilts. Details are on the web site www.healthyabingdon.org.uk.

Healthy Abingdon was set up a year ago to bring together groups and individuals to find ways to improve health and wellbeing in the town. There are over 200 community groups in the town that contribute towards peoples health and wellbeing in various ways from physical exercise to keeping the mind active or just having fun.  Dave Butterworth, the Chair of Healthy Abingdon says, ‘It is all about helping people keep well, recover faster from illnesses and cope better with long-term problems. These are all activities that the voluntary sector does well and could do even better in partnership with the NHS and social care services.’

One of the projects that Healthy Abingdon has just started is to make Abingdon more Dementia Friendly which involves, amongst other things, signing up more Dementia Friends and helping those who deal with the public to be more understanding of the needs of those with dementia.

Oxfordshire Artweeks comes to Abingdon

Oxfordshire Artweeks
Oxfordshire Artweeks has already happened in Oxford City. We visited the exhibition in the cloisters behind St John the Evangelist Church, on the Iffley Road – a lovely setting with interesting exhibits including some by Caroline Harben of Abingdon. Her paintings included the County Hall in Abingdon,

and a view from the roof top of the county hall (abstract above, realistic below).

The exhibitions in Abingdon have now opened. They include the exhibition of many artists at Peachcroft Farm Barn.

When we were there we could watch art in action There was a potter inside, and a sculptor outside.

I also visited the Mind exhibition which ran for just one day.

Artworks included sculptures (head sculptures), collages and art works in acrylics and pastels; and a slide show of artwork in action. Children’s art was happening on the day, as well as music, a tombola, and cakes.

Oxfordshire Artweeks continues in Abingdon until Bank Holiday Monday.

Boat Sunk near Margaret Brown Gardens

Boat Sunk
On Saturday afternoon a boat was sunk near Margaret Brown Gardens. This picture was taken Sunday lunchtime. By Sunday evening the boat was all underwater.

I read on a boating forum “bout a dozen blokes on the booze came past us in a possibly Shetland 19ft ish boat when we were in the Nags Head garden yesterday afternoon. All sitting on the bow/roof steering with their feet. Mate says to me that’s gonna end in tears.

Baking and Brass, Bowling and Bands

Brass
Before the Royal Wedding yesterday, the Market Place in Abingdon had the Abbey Brass Band playing.
Bakes
They were supported by members from Abbey Brass who had baked cakes. This was a repeat of last years successful ‘Bakes and Brass‘ to raise money for the Abbey Brass. Their band hut, next to the outdoor pool, like the outdoor pool needs a rebuild, and so they are starting to put plans together for that, and to raise money for what could be a large project.
Bowling
Also on the Market Place were Abingdon Bowling Club with a tombola.
Bowling
There were also members and staff from Abingdon-on-Thames Town Council selling arm-bands for Music in the Parks. The bands will be Sidekickz, Undercovers, Oxfordshire Youth Big Band, Abingdon Town Band + fireworks.

Congratulations to Councillor Alice Badcock (on the right) who is not only on the town council but also as a VWHDC councillor has joined the ruling cabinet. Matthew Barber recently stood down after seven years as VWHDC leader. Roger Cox has taken over as leader, and has brought in Alice as Head of Community Services.
