The South Avenue Advent Windows are back. More houses than ever have taken part this year. Some numbers are doubled up. If you go to look round you can drop in a donation for the Helen and Douglas House Hospice through some letter boxes. Or view The Helen and Douglas House Christmas Appeal.

Abingdon Mummers

The Abingdon Mummers were performing their traditional Christmas Mummers play this evening around drinking places in Abingdon including:
- Punch Bowl,
- Broad Face,
- Kings Head & Bell,
- Old Anchor,
- Tipsy Mercer,
- and the Conservative Club.

After the Conservative Club the players headed for the last performance of the evening at the Brewery Tap.

The play tells the battle between King George and the Bold Slasher. First King George is killed and has to be revived by the doctor.

(That is after Bailey the dog tried her best.)

Then the Bold Slasher is killed. On this occasion the intervention of the doctor fails, and Mrs Finney is called in to revive Bold Slasher.
The play is all about light and dark, life and death,

Father Christmas comes in to lead the singing of We wish you a Merry Christmas.
A collection tin was then handed round for BeFreeYC (befreeyc.org.uk) which helps young carers in Oxfordshire.
End of Term Feasts and Festivities

There was a festive end of term for the Abingdon Silver Club at Abingdon College. They enjoyed cakes and savoury treats after a final rush to finish off various silver items including spoons, earrings, pendants and silver Christmas tree toys.

The Abingdon schools broke up today for the Christmas holiday. The holidays run from 20th December 2019 to 3rd January 2020 – during which there will be feasts and festivities. (The silver dog is in the Abingdon Museum)
That reminds me The Abingdon Mummers are performing their Christmas play round the town centre and Ock Street. I shall dash out to see if I can find them ….
River Ock after recent rainfall

The latest Environment Agency update on the River Ock says “Property flooding is not currently expected. River levels remain high but continue to fall on the River Ock and Letcombe Brook following recent rainfall. Therefore, the risk of flooding is currently reducing. From this evening (18/12/19), through tomorrow 19/12/19, Friday 20/12/19 and the weekend, we are expecting heavy, persistent showers across the area. We therefore expect river levels to rise further over the coming days and into the early part of next week. We are closely monitoring the situation. Our incident response staff are operating weirs to reduce flood risk and are in the area clearing weed/trash screens.”

Tesco cannot be reached along the Ock Path from Mill Road.

Nor can Tesco be reached on the path from Chaunterell Way.

There was an Environment Agency van parked near Tesco monitoring the situation.
There is normally a height difference at this River Ock weir, where the river is divided into two streams, but today there was no waterfall.
