Pentecost Sunday
There are five entrances into the Albert Park in Abingdon. The entrance at the bottom – held open by a metal arm, gives a view to the Albert Memorial at the top of the park.

Albert Park is landscaped with trees and bushes – no flower beds. There is a pathway inside the perimeter and grass lawns at the centre, including the super perfect lawn of the bowls club.

There were people seated in small groups on the grass. The lockdown is easing and life is speeding up in Abingdon. Let us hope it does not go back to the complete Helter Skelter of before.

Year 1 and 6 went back to school yesterday or today, with smaller cohort groups and different entrances and separate playtimes to try to keep social distancing. (picture shows marking at Entrance 2 at Carswell School near Albert Park).

There were still a lot of children about in the park.

Albert devised the children’s demanding curriculum, and closely monitored the day-to-day running of the schoolroom with the governors and governesses.

Pentecost Sunday
During the nine days between Ascension Day and Pentecost some Christians in Abingdon did something special to mark the time. (Ascension Day celebrates Jesus going to heaven and Pentecost is when the Holy Spirit came down to empower the early disciples.)

The people of Peachcroft Church took part in the Pentecost Colouring Project and made this video. The project brought together 55 different households, joining to form bigger pictures on the theme of Pentecost. The pictures can now be seen in the church windows.

The Fruit of the Holy Spirit is a term in the bible that sums up the nine attributes of living in accord with the Holy Spirit. The thought for the day put together by the Abingdon-on-Thames Parish over nine days featured those nine attributes.

There was a virtual prayer room Thy Kingdom Come – Abingdon (May 2020) where people signed up for every hour through the ten days leading up to Pentecost.

I got a slot at 3am on Saturday 30th May and 4am on Saturday 31st May, and took a video of a prayer candle and of the dawn on Pentecost Sunday.

Lots of animals could be seen round Abingdon today. There were crocodiles and pigeons…

and a large cow among the menagerie in West St Helen Street.

In East St Helen Street there were Polar Bears,

and a Toucan among other species.

In Parsons Mead, there was a lego model of the County Hall built by one of the Abingdon Traditional Morris Dancers.

The Ock Street Ox was there as part of the Abingdon Zoo Day. The notice beside it says that the Mayor of Ock Street ceremony will be back in June 2021.

It was not possible to get round all Abingdon, especially as I had to go to work in the afternoon. Our next door neighbour remarked, it goes to show how amazingly artistic the people of Abingdon are
