Postponed Carols
At Trinity the Christmas Eve torchlight service happened this afternoon – the 9th January. There was snow and ice on Christmas Eve and it had to be postponed. The show consisted of scenes played out by the children as well as some solos by them.

The Salvation Army will also be holding a carol service – next Sunday, and next Saturday at 7 pm at St Helens Church – not postponed but planned – there will be a performance of Amahl and the Night Visitors. It is ‘a delightful seasonal opera (which lasts about forty minutes and is free)’.

The Gift Centre soon gets bigger

The Gift Centre moved to its new location a  few weeks ago. The main advantage of the new shop is that it has a wide staircase and lots more space upstairs. There is a lot of work to get it all ready and the framing workshop still needs kitting out.

But in another week people will be able to go up the stairs to the gallery where pictures are being hung as we speak.

Any idea what artist did these four pictures. He achieved cult status on Radio Oxford, went on to television stardom, and now has proved himself an accomplished artist in acrylics and oils.

The Christmas Tree in the Information Centre in Old Abbey House had been near perfect and hardly dropped a needle, but like many other trees it was taken to the Market Place today …

where it was reduced to chips and taken away to be used as mulch.

Twelfth Night

Christmas Lights
Most of the Christmas lights in the town centre were off tonight. That could be because we are beyond Twelfth Night (5th December).

But some of the lights along Bath Street are still on.

According to wikipedia, there are some that count the 6th December as Twelfth Night because they start each new day at sunset, so Twelfth Night precedes Twelfth Day.

Anyway,  Christmas trees can be recycled on the Market Place on Saturday 8th January by a very friendly group of lads… or they can be taken to Millets Farm up to Saturday 15th January, or put out next to your brown bin if you pay for a brown bin.
