Braggs and Gowerings remembered in new road names

Most of the new homes in Abbey Fields have been built on the left side of the footpath going towards Sunningwell. Now, homes are being built on the right side too. The development has started away from Dunmore Road, and the entrance is between Alexander Close and Boulter Drive.

Some people have already moved into Braggs Lane. The Braggs cycle shop at 2 High Street is well remembered (now The Dogs Spot).

Other people are living in Gowering Way (without an s).

Gowerings the car dealership was at 111 Ock Street (now Albert Lodge retirement homes).

Family Fun Morning and Christian Aid Cakes

Members of Abingdon Baptist Church were busy today, preparing for two community events. Outside the church, they put up a banner announcing a Free Family Fun Morning. On Saturday, there will be games and activities including a bouncy castle for 5s, and the JAM Band will be playing throughout the morning.

Church members were also seen putting away a banner at St Ethelwold’s after tea coffee and cakes – a fund raiser for Christian Aid. It is late for that but not the fun day.

Lantern Floating in Abingdon

The Abingdon Peace Group had their first lantern-floating this Friday, 9th August, the anniversary of the Nagasaki bombing. There were messages from the Mayors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and a group of about 40 people made a community affirmation of peace round the Peace Pole in St Ethelwold’s Garden.

Emiko, the teacher in Hiroshima whose students made and painted the lanterns sent a message: Today is August 6th, which marks the 79th anniversary of the atomic bomb attack. Hiroshima was enveloped in prayer. And we, who wish for a peaceful world, are encouraged with you and your activity.

People then processed to St Helen’s Wharf to light the candles and launch the lanterns.

The lanterns floated and made a peaceful scene and as the sun set they were gathered back by a couple of canoes.
