Children in Need, and Philippines Disaster Appeal – This Weekend

The annual Children in Need charity event took place yesterday – where the BBC devotes the evening’s broadcasting, and many celebrities devote their time, to raising money for Children in Need. There were probably lots of fun events in schools and work places in Abingdon to raise money for Children in Need. I did see The Kings Head and Bell had a Chilli eating contest.

Today (the morning after) shoppers going to Waitrose in Abingdon were met by Rotary Club members with buckets for the Philippines Typhoon Haiyan appeal. There were also buckets in a number of other shops.

Scouts Cake Stall and Children’s Roundabout on the Market Place

On the Market Place this morning there was a cake stall and tombola run by the scouts.

37 scouts and explorers from Oxfordshire are going to the 23rd World Scout Jamboree 2015 in Japan to join with 30,000 scouts from all around the world. The cake stall is just one of many events to help raise money to pay for the trip which will be a once in a lifetime experience.

There was also a children’s roundabout on the Market Place. There used to be a regular Saturday roundabout until about a year ago but this one looks different.

(A few spam comments have got through recently. It is a constant battle and most get caught. The spam generally look like gobbledygook and has a link to a web site. Such links increase that web site’s chance of getting a high ranking on google search. Here is a sample … “This was the invention that will brought the British back up in settle The Abu Dhabi supermarket is without a doubt two-Hundred-Thousand pillow meters In some areas …“)

British Legion Abingdon – Weekly Meat Draw

Last Saturday we went to the Royal British Legion in Abingdon for a concert. The concert was interrupted at 10pm by the weekly meat draw – a raffle where bottles of wine, and joints of meat are the prizes. I think I heard that the meat came from Dews Meadow Farmshop in East Hanney, who were there today on the Market Place as part of the Farmers Market.

We won some  pork  – the best we had tasted in a long time, and went back for more today.

(The British Legion are happy to welcome new members. I think its just over £20 a year for membership. They have very reasonably priced drinks and a weekly meat draw. )
