Abingdon Mayor Making 2014

 Abingdon Mayor Making
Angela Lawrence was elected as the Mayor of Abingdon this evening at a crowded Guildhall, and Helen Pighills was elected her Deputy.

Angela is the first “Independent” to become Mayor of Abingdon since 1982 (when Brian Jones was Mayor). She said “It is such a thrill and honour to be elected Mayor of our lovely town.”

Samantha Bowring, the outgoing Mayor, described the many and varied Abingdon people and societies she had met during her year as Mayor, and described Abingdon as a brilliant cool town.

Four organisations and people received Mayors awards from the the outgoing Mayor:

  • Abingdon Youth Football Club
  • Stephen Body who has been leading scouts for 50 years
  • Eleanor Dangerfield of the Tithe Farm and Ladygrove Residents Association and Green Gym.
  • Colin Galloway who cares for the town by litter picking and voluntary work with the Green Gym and Northmoor Trust.

Abbey Buildings re-open for the summer months

 Abbey Buildings
The Abingdon Abbey Buildings have re-opened for the summer months – from 1st May to 30th September. The opening hours are Wednesday to Sunday 2PM – 4:30PM. Entry £1.

On the left is the Checker and the Long Gallery (just out of view). On the right is the Unicorn Theatre.

Abingdon Abbey would have been a much large complex of buildings, and this is all that remains. The buildings have been taken over and cared for by The Friends of Abingdon – Abingdon’s Civic Society – since 1944.

Civic Societies generally exist to celebrate the heritage, and safeguard the best buildings of a town. In recent years The Friends have become more active, as they were in their founding years – 70 years ago. I have particularly noticed them responding and petitioning on planning applications in Abingdon, and organising walks and other events celebrating Abingdon’s Heritage. Their biggest treasure and worry has always been the Abbey Buildings, where they continue to renew the fabric. Last year they did some work on the roof. They have also added two interesting information timelines, one about the Abbey, and one about the town.

The next lot of walks are on the Bank Holiday – Monday 26th May 2014. Book from 10am on the Market Place.

Abingdon Air and Country Show 2014

Air and Country Show 6
The Abingdon Air and Country show, at Dalton Barracks, attracted large crowds on May 4th 2014. The skies were clear and the sunny weather ideal for watching airplanes, walking round the stalls, and viewing all the vehicles on show. Any profits go to a good cause.
Air and Country Show 1
BBC Radio Oxford were broadcasting from the show. As part of their regular visits round the places in Oxfordshire their week in Abingdon co-coincided with the show. More about Abingdon from them next week.
Air and Country Show 3
I see in the Oxford Mail that there is an estimated crowd of up to 20,000, the biggest ever by all accounts.
Air and Country Show 5
The Brietling Wingwalkers were back for about the third year.
Air and Country Show 7
There are more picture on the Abingdon Blog Facebook page where Colin, one of the organisers says “Huge thanks to the many thoud=sands who supported the show today…I think I’m right in saying everyone had a great time.”

Any money raised goes to the Air Ambulance and other charities like the Royal British Legion.
