Preliminary archaeological excavations are underway in the field in North Abingdon, belonging to Radley College, for which planning permission is being sought.
A number of trial trenches have been dug, guided by the findings of geophysical surveys, and as always in Abingdon there are the prospects that there will be the remains of some old structures down there. I believe the last time the field had any excavations it was part of a study by students at Radley College in the 1970s. If anybody can remember the year or has any pictures that would be interesting to know.
Thanks for the update, I thought they had started putting in the foundations for the new development. As a matter of interest, do you know who is undertaking the archaeological survey?
There’s been a van in the field belonging to Oxford Archaeology, so assume they are doing the survey.
…it looks to me a lot like foundations for a runway….
No its the first set of runway approach lights. Those super bright ones that stay on all night. the others are going on top of long alley, the county hall and st Helens church. They did want to put them in a field just south of Abingdon near oday hill but some nimbys got a bit shirty…
Can’t wait for my Duty Free. Where do we queue?
