National pub chain J.D.Wetherspoon has a history of exploring a building’s past when it comes up with a name for a new pub. They did not use the previous use ‘Old Post Office’ when naming their new Abingdon pub. Instead the pub chain looked further back into bygone times and called it ‘The Narrows’.
Work began on July 18th and should be ready for opening by October, providing about 40 jobs.

Just seen what Weather Spoons have done in the small seaside town of Deal. The Norman Wisdom is a fantastic little pub. Hope they make something as impressive in Abingdon.
40 new Jobs!! The newly opened Nags Head is struggling to obtain good professional staff so not sure where these ’40’ staff will come from.

At last

a wake up call for all the greedy pubs £3.80 £4.00 a pint etc

A large (and good quality) wine and a pint of shandy for under £7. And the place was buzzing. Yes – a wake up call for the outrageously priced ‘other pubs’ in Abingdon. Next quest: a decent pub that serves consistenly good food at affordable prices. Not so far achieved by any pub in Abingdon. Can the Narrows deliver this also?
