The district council has a new, clearer website – just launched this week. The web page about Graffiti Cleaning got my attention with its practical advice …
If graffiti is on private property, the web site says, “The owner of the property is responsible for its removal … the quicker graffiti is cleaned off, the easier it is to remove … prompt removal tends to discourage more graffiti”.
There was a spate of grafitti in South Abingdon about three months ago. Most has been cleaned. Just a few examples remain. Some is on a large green box with the ID: OX092 (Preston Road near junction to Gainsborough Green) and even more on OX093 (Preston Road near junction to Cotman Close).
The district web site has a section on “Graffiti on privately owned street furniture (e.g. post boxes, telecommunications cabinets)“. They suggest contacting the owner.
Both Virgin Media and BT appear to not recognise these boxes so it would be helpful to identify the owner. Nothing on the green box helps very much.
Last section on the Vale website is “What is the district council responsible for cleaning?“.
“… its own property that may include council owned public toilets, rubbish bins and some leisure centres. To report graffiti on property owned by Vale of White Horse District Council, please contact our waste contractors Biffa by emailing admin.vale@biffa.co.uk…”
This information sign at the district council end of the Ock Valley Walk has had graffiti on it for over three months. I have now sent an email.
now i know, i’ll do the same and report the graffit on hadland road community centre
When did Biffa take over from Verdant? I thought Verdant was the preferred company after Biffa lost the contract last year.
It does not look like graffiti but an official ident done by stencil. As the numbers are consecutive I think that the numbers are meant to be there. Whereas the post code “OX14 5DR” is obviously graffiti. How many graffiti artists carry stencils around with them? They specialise in free hand.
The VWHDC webpage was Last reviewed: 28 – 06 – 2011 so maybe they missed that Biffa is now Verdant. I will wait to see if they update it. But I sent my email to Biffa.
Knight Templar,
… ‘How many graffiti artists carry stencils around with them?’
… well, there’s Banksy and there’s even an entry on Wikipedia on the subject:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stencil_graffiti
but I don’t think Abingdon is nurturing it’s very own Banksy.
Both green boxes are the property of Virgin Media
– a smaller green box on the corner of Baker Rd and Preston Rd has the number 092-01, which I take to mean that is fed from the 092 box, and that one belongs to Virgin
Verdant is part of Biffa anyway so I don’t think it matters that much
Thanks for the hint on Virgin Media – have logged with their website so see how that goes.
I have also logged the graffiti issues with Virgin – I’d noticed that one of the boxes was also unlocked !
And they have done it. Thanks Virgin Media.
