After all the Fair Trade Comments on the post about the Abbey Fish Ponds here is a post about Fair Trade …
The Chamber of Commerce’s Fair Trade group met at lunchtime to discuss re-establishing Abingdon as a Fair Trade town. There were representatives from shops, including Waitrose and The Co-op, the town council, churches, schools and general consumers.
As well as planning a Fair Trade day on the Market Place on 20th August – where there are still pitches available for businesses who would like to take part (contact the Chamber), the group set up a steering committee.
On 20th August, I will be going bananas for FairTrade again. But this time I hope to be part of a bunch. Banana costumes cost from £8 and upwards on the internet.
As President of Abingdon Chamber of Commerce I looked around the room and felt so proud to be part of the Abingdon Fair Trade group. I would like to thank Mike Moon for doing so much to get it organised, and to everybody that was at the meeting to officially set up a steering group.
I think the CofC are to be commended on taking a lead in this matter. Hopefully when the town council has sorted out its position on fair trade we can once again have fair trade town status.
